maybe it was small shark. Thresher?

Thresher mouth is pretty small - bait eater...

Mike was fishing in tight by the point, and that's where the landlord often hangs out.

At one point yesterday Yaad saw something near us and tried to point it out, but it was gone before we could get eyes on it.  We were a mile offshore.
I think it happened when I was pulling the crab traps near the surf.
We not be hanging any fish over the side anymore. I had a burlap sack but did not use it. Lesson learned

You're lucky DFW didn't check your ling when you landed. I'm pretty sure it was undersized 😉
I was worried about that. The biologist was there to check out the fish. Interesting that he said he did not know what the minimum size was.

tried to modify my earlier response, didn't seem to work -hopefully not duplicating.

found a cool website, some scientists analyzed shark bites.
found that a 10" bit diameter correlates to a 11' shark
we don't see the full diameter on that Ling, but assuming the ling is about 6" tall, then the full diameter would be about 10" - so could have been an 11' GWS

site link below if interested.

I had a burlap but did not use it. I will from now on.
How was the the swell at Trinidad. Coming up to Humboldt this weekend. If conditions are right I might try it out.

If you didn’t feel whatever was eating this, they must have had very strong and sharp jaws. So either a large shark or a diver with a huge end cutting pliers.

Yaad, what is the story on you swimming there?

I mean just paddling on my kayak in that area i didnt flip or anything lol, I saw something big breach the surface when we were out by the whistle but i was hoping it was salmon or dolphin/seal or something. Moving really quick i didnt even think of shark as I saw no fin breach.

Dude that is spooky! My first thought was shark when I saw the photo. Then saw everybody else’s reply. Most sealions will yank on a stringer to try to rip the fish off—you would definitely notice & feel it…they can’t bite a fish in half like that. They have teeth like a dog. That’s why you see them throwing/tossing fish on the surface, they’re trying to tear them apart into bite-size chunks.
