Strong possibility that SlowMo and I will be out on the water Thurs. We were aiming for Wed. but might be up for Thurs. as well. All plans at this end should firm by Monday PM.

Hey bloodbath, had a great time fishing and camping with you and lisa but please don't e-mail any of the photos to me because my wife reads the e-mail and some of those photos may be incriminating. thanks , jack.    if you want to contact me do it through this website.  apologies to native for disrupting this thread.

My dad and I are planning to fish in Monterey (not sure where yet) on Thursday if weather permits.  I want to try Carmel river beach or Monastery beach but never fish there, not sure where the reserves border is.  I would have a better idea on Wed.  My dad is bring a newbie, first time on kayak so we might end up fishing the kelp beds in Capitola.

SlowMo and I are for sure planning to fish on Thursday. Making the trek down to the Monteray area is looking a little difficult time wise because of plans for the late afternoon/evening, but not yet out of the question. I would really like to try Carmel as that is an area I have not fished yet and would put out the extra effort if others wanted to give it a go. Short of that anywhere in the Santa Cruz area works.

Alright guys, how's this suit ya?
Carmel (Monastery/Carmel Bay weather permitting) early Thurs 6/6:30? Good parking @ Monastery is limited. Fishing's been great (RF)!
Either that or a warm up for MBK tourny...

Fish On!,

Okay we are in for Carmel Bay, will leave Santa Cruz at 5am and should be there at 6:10. Is the parking/launching obvious (probably a dumb question once I see the set up)?

Man, all this talk about fishing on a weekday has me amped! I might have to take a vacation day.

The Pt Lobos Reserve boundary begins in the first cove to the south of Monastery Beach. Parking is totally obvious; long stretch of dirt shoulder on the west side of HWY 1. The standard launch spot is the far south end of the beach.
Here's an underwater map of the Pt Lobos Reserve for reference.

Good luck,
PK

Hey Native,
I'm in. Are we planning to fish Carmel Beach or Monastery? The map Sin Coast sent is awesome for the boundaries to Pt. Lobos Reserve. I have Blue Chart on my gps too! Give me a call if you have time Joe @ (408)891-0980.
Thanks

Hey RocketMan & Slo Mo,

I just spoke to Joe AKA Bloodbath. We are meeting at Black Bear Diner (corner of Hgwy 1 & Rio Rd). It's the last stop light before Monastery. We are meeting at 6:15 hope to see you there. If this is a problem let me know.

I think I'll join you unless you think the parking will be overloaded.  I've never launched there, but as I recall, there's quite a long dirt lot along the highway, and with wheels, I wouldn't need to be right at the end.

Native, We will be there, should be no problem. As we are coming in from a distance, please operate by the 5 minute rule (wait no more than 5 minutes then go) in case we get hung in traffic or some other delay and we will catch up with you at the beach. Excited about trying a new spot! SlowMo just got a fishfinder for his kayak, so hopefully we will have that together for tomorrow and he can spend all his time trying to figure out how to read it and I will catch all the fish (ha, ha). See you, Bloodbath, and hopefully Fuzzy Tom in the AM.
Anyone else???

There is always plenty of parking at Monastery, Tom. I wouldn't sweat it.
You're better off parking on the south end of the dirt shoulder, past the mini-bridge over San Jose Creek.

Its impossible to miss Monastery, as the HWY drops down to the water level and parallels the beach for about 1/2 mile. It is approx 1 mile past Rio Rd (the last stoplight on HWY 1 South) and just before Pt Lobos. Here's a arial shot of the south end of the beach: http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=200402317&mode=sequential&flags=0&year=2004

I just unload my yak+gear on the sand next to my truck then drag it across the beach to the ocean. Although, sand wheels would be nice, they definitely aren't mandatory.

The swell looks perfect but it will be windy in the afternoon: .THU...W WINDS 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 2 FT.
NW SWELL 1 TO 4 FT AT 7 SECONDS. PATCHY FOG IN THE MORNING.

I'm hoping to get there around 6:30--7. Blue OK Drifter on top of a green Chrysler Pacifica.

I will monitor Channel 69 on my VHF. Is that the preferred channel? Not sure...just barely got a VHF last week!
See ya,
PK
