I don't like recommending things because of the YMMV thing.

No kidding. I think my brother-in-law asks me to recommend things to him all the time just so he has someone to bitch to when he doesn't like it.

Get the volume seller ones, they build those like a tank cause it costs them lots of money on trying to repair the volume units if they f*'ed it up.
Stay away from KitchenAid, stick with Whirlpool.  The simpler the better.

I got a display unit LG from costco for $300 a couple of years ago. Love that unit but if I was going to spend some money I would go Bosch.

... a college professor and a psychiatrist, 2 kids, which I guess might even be worse than meth heads.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

Well, except the psychiatrist part, but my wife is occasionally psychotic, so almost the same...

The crazy thing was their stated income on the rental application: 40K per MONTH. Like, just buy a damn house already. Some people just don't want the hassle of home ownership, and I have to admit, I'm starting to see the wisdom of that approach.

I bought a Samsung dishwasher and clothes washer and dryer when I got my house 11 years ago. I also bought a GE oven and microwave. The Samsung stuff all died on me and has been replced by GE stuff.

So I suggest not Samsung.

Same thing here.  Have a Maytag.  Maybe 20 years old.   Still works okay.  But the lower basket is rusted.  Some parts fell off when I tried to take off the rust and coat with ReRack.  $260 for a new basket, so figure probably better to buy a DW.

I didn't think much of the $2.3K Thermador Masterpiece we had.  Nice internal layout, but didn't clean very well, more like a dish rinser than a dish washer.
Switched to a Miele G 4977 and it cleans better at half the MSRP.

I’m in Santa Rosa. I just met a great appliance repair guy. He fixed my fridge and showed me how to do it next time.

He does installs.  A dishwasher is pretty easy BTW. Get the measurements  right beforehand.

Appliance Doctor. That was the guys company name.

I feel your pain on the rental. We own a rental that's on the other side of the country (in Maryland). We managed it ourselves long-distance for several years, always renting to people with solid income and never had any problem. Then we got a tenant who was making way into 6 figures, and his family damage all kinds of stuff (punched holes in walls, destroyed the range, trashed the dishwasher, ruined a bathtub, etc.). We finally got them out, only to get another high-income nut-case who sent multiple nasty emails every day. We finally had to get a management agency, which helps, but has its own set of issues.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

6 years ago when we bought our place my wife and I did all the looking and when we found the place I did all the talking with the selling agent and decided on the bid, which was more than 300k over asking and was so close to the next lower bid the seller wanted to restart the bidding. So then I talked to the selling agent and she convinced the owners to take our bid

We put in our bid on Sunday and signed Tuesday which felt like insanity, the only work our agent did was round up the paperwork. She was so happy she said she was going to buy us a dishwasher and I said yeah and it’s going to be an expensive one too. I researched the hell out of them and bought the second most expensive Bosch, around $2k. Giving her the receipt was a moment to cherish

The Bosch is quiet and does a great job. You could probably get one for less than we (she) paid and actually we only use two of the cycles so a lower model would probably be just as good. Looks like the prices came down since then

We’re looking for a good stove now and seems like reliability on appliances has gone way down, even the most expensive ones

Love cooking on gas stoves . Just hate the cleaning , so i ended up with a nice glass top. Don't skimp on cookware for glass tops. The cheap ones warp and won't sit well after a while.
