I've been meaning to take my Hobie Revo 16 to a surf session since I bought it. But this was back in the summer, and Salmon fishing was a higher priority. Now in the winter there's not much going on, so I took it to LM.
I didn't take the drive, of course. Just paddle. And I used a strap for better control.

Here's what's in the video:
1. Hanging out with the surfers - trying to catch the wave just before the break
2. Kayak in breakers white wash (still with the surfers)
3. Capsize practice (at 2:30 minutes in)
4. Kayak in near shore breakers and white wash, front and back facing the waves

Have fun!

Thanks guys!
It was very educational (for example, the PFD making it hard to flip the kayak). It also helped me build confidence. The hull was full of water. At least 6 gallons. I had to use the drain plug. Water was gushing...

The battery ran out at some point, but I had a huge tumble on a wave that broke on the back of the kayak (I was facing the beach). I was about 6 ft deep. The wave was so strong that the back of the kayak was pushed into the sand, and we both tumbled together. When it was over I noticed that the rudder broke (it wasn’t deployed, but I released the bungee cord in case I’d need the rudder).

Awesome! Thanks for posting.

I've got an Adventure/Revo 16 that I've been meaning to get on the water for self-rescue practice, and this video has inspired me to do so (hopefully, minus the broken rudder)...

Thanks for sharing -- looks like it was a good time and a good learning experience. The only advice I would add is to avoid having the kayak between you and the waves. Around the 7 minute mark. You were in shallow, but it can still give you a pretty good knock/shove.

I bet there was at least 6 gallons in the hull -- at the end you can see that your seat pan is pretty much flooded so the hull was sitting pretty low in the water. Good on you for staying upright with all that water inside -- things get pretty tippy quick when it gets full.

Cheers,
Brad

Nice work getting out and practicing!  Honestly, we need to see more post/videos like this from the new guys!  I just see too many unprepared people attempting tricky surf launches.  Fun to watch, but dangerous for them.   :smt005
