Looking to broaden my horizons and  target steelhead this winter. I tried a few times last season but mostly one-off's here and there with friends, none of us having much idea what we were doing.

I fished San Lorenzo a few times, which I've since heard argued against due to the limited numbers and the stress anglers can cause steelies.

I also fished Pescadero, trying out a fly rod for the first time. Fun, but not too productive.

Now I'm looking at waters that hold more robust steelhead populations and most of what I'm seeing is centered around Eureka area, which is a 5 1/2+ hr drive for me. A little much for a day trip. Has anyone found success fishing the Russian River? Or any other options closer to Santa Cruz/Monterey?

Also, recommendations on gear? I plan to take my 5wt fly rod just for fun, but have a lighter spinning setup. Was considering getting an ugly stick and a baitcaster but mainly because I've never used a baitcaster before and want an excuse to buy one. No real strategy behind it.

Russian River populations are dismal compared to historical numbers, even with the stocking.  Far from "robust".  I can launch near my house, and still choose to leave them alone...

If you hook a winter steelhead on a 5 wt you will not land it. 7/8wt with full sink is what you need fir coastal winter steelhead.

The best way to learn steelhead on the fly is to hire a guide at the most productive time of year on a productive river. Upper trinity, upper Klamath, or upper rogue by shady cove in the fall fir indicator nymphing, lower klamath by the glen aug/sept for swinging.

For gear fishing spend a weekend with good guide on the chetco and you’ll learn a ton and probably catch fish.

Those will be the best way to lesson the learning curve for an elusive fish.

Some fly shops will offer classes, seminars or otw weekend group deals, another worthwhile way to get a head start.

I'm no steelheader, but I do make a few feeble attempts each year.

I wouldn't write off the San Lorenzo. I've seen several nice ones caught there (all were CnR, btw), and had one big beast take a swipe at my lure once (sadly, it missed). I've caught quite a few smaller trout (up to 14" or so) while fishing there too, so that helps keep it interesting.

The real difficulty is finding decent conditions that align with days that fishing is allowed (I assume the same is true of all steelhead waters). The San Lorenzo is usually either a trickle or completely blown out, with just a rare day here-and-there in between when it's actually fishable. Even more rarely are those fishable days on open-for-fishing days.

If you're worried about too much fishing pressure harming the population, I really don't think it's as bad as it appears. Most of the people that I see on the river are just as hopeless as me...

Steelhead is on my target list this year. But I’m kinda figuring I’ll just try to wake up early and hit Lake Sonoma for one a the land locked steelies. That or head up north and hire LoletaEric to help me out! That video gives me all the feels!

It’s good to learn about all the different tactics for targeting steelhead—because it helps you be a well-rounded angler. But the local coastal rivers require a totally different strategy compared to fishing the north coast rivers or central valley systems. Downsized gear and stealthy approaches are key. The SLR is your best bet until we get some real rain. The rivers south of Monterey are also bound by low-flow restrictions...so the Carmel has to be over 80cfs & Big Sur over 40cfs (call the steelhead hotline 831-649-2886 or check the usgs gages online). Let’s get together after the next rain!

I would lean more to the lower Sacramento River.  Red Bluff, Redding.  Lots of Trout, big Steelhead.  Half the driving time.  Take a day of half day with a guide for quick education.  I bed a drift boat trip is not a lot different than kayaking the section.

I'm hitting the Russian river tomorrow (see my post on hookups section).  I'm not 'steel head fisher' by any means as i usually fly fish on the putah but you'll need at least a 7 weight fly rod.  I've been reading that using the 'duck and chuck' method (need a sinking or shooting fly line) along with a lead weight is what tends to work.  I'm planning on using an egg pattern followed by a comet pattern tied to the egg.

One day i plant to hit the lower sac to do some drift fishing for steelhead as I hear that it is much more productive than the Russian.

This.  And if you do manage to get it to shore, you've probably exhausted it to the point it can't survive.  Same with light conventional gear.

Go heavier.

Bobber fishing is going to be a good way to start. Hang a jig or some bait under it and drift it along.
