I just got off the phone with Skipper Shane. Let me share the latest word.

They plan to be set for us at 8:30 pm on the 10th. Please be at the landing with your gear ready to load no later than 8:15. The goal is to be underway by 10 pm.  :smt001

The guys will be in contact with the Independence out of 22nd St Landing for the latest intel. Like us, they are stoked to be going. They've wanted to hit up the Cortez in November for years now. Still, it is weather dependent. The forecast and word from boats on the spot will determine where we head. It is great to have the flexibility of 3 full days of fishing to work with.

The weather will be great at the Cortez this weekend, and we are hoping and even expecting the best for our trip. In the worst case, if the forecast looks terrible, rather than beat us up they'll pull the plug and refund our money. That would be a shame given all the planning, expense of prepping for the trip, and vacation days, but really it is a very generous gesture on their part.

IMPORTANT - STROBE LIGHTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS FOR MARINE FLARES Shane told me the strobes are difficult to see from the perspective of a boat. They are hard to distinguish from reflections on the water. There is no mistaking a handheld flare. Please try to bring 2 or 3 and contact me if this will be a problem for you.

Yea, I did not go out this morning either.  Too much to do.

Last weekend I went out at Garrapata and my fishfinder gave me two lines twice and died.  I did well fishing blind and figured it was just corrosion on the contacts.  After cleaning etc. no luck.  I called West Marine because I had purchased the $29 replace it if anything happens for the next three years warranty and they gave me the new upgrade of the same model Humminbird 717.  It plugs right into my existing transducer and power supply and now I have a spare set for my new kayak when I buy it.  I can not wait to try it for the first time on this trip.  Thanks WM.

Rick,

I have borrowed a 30 lb set up from Scott but would love to try one of the high speed setups.

It is getting really hard to think about anything else at this time in the game.

Etienne -

I also have a 30# Newell with a 5.5 retrieve that you can use. BTW, will be bringing the Trident if you still want to test drive. See you Sat.  :smt006

I spent most of the day in the garage yesterday, putting gear right and packing for the trip. Then I could scarcely sleep last night. Can't wait!

Be sure to thank your buddies for putting themselves in harms way to save our homes. My son returned to SD a week ago after being evacuated. Nothing lost and everyone OK.  :smt003

Anyone want to borrow a handheld flare for the trip??

I just bought a 4-pack which I needed for my boat anyway.  First 3 to respond can borrow one to carry for the night time bugging.  Save yourself a few $$

Please thank them on my behalf too.

Ok, some weather info. Here's what NOAA has to say about the nearshore waters for Sat:

Quote
.SAT...WIND NW 10 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. MIXED SWELL NW 2 TO 4
 FT AND S 3 FT.

Looks fine for San Clemente Island. I saw another forecast that predicted a chance for periods of drizzle offshore, and cloudly to partly cloudy skies. Daytime temps should be no lower than the 60s.

Wetsand is calling for a building swell as we enter the weekend. Looks like up to 8' offshore come Sunday.

Please keep in mind the Islander crew will have a much more 'real world' assessment coming up.
