Do we need wire leaders or is flurocarbon good enough?

Tote, sorry I missed your question until now. Flouro should do nicely.

Man, yesterday was your day!

Anyhow, In getting stuff ready for this trip I wanted to put an offer out there for some of you that may not be used to this type of fishing. If you need heavier duty rods and reels capable of yanking on these fish, let me know. I can have some great 30lb rigs available for you all to use, at no charge to you, and will bring them down to the dock with me on the 10th.

Ric, that is a very cool and generous offer. You guys should definitely take advantage. What Ric didn't talk about is the incredible raffle he has lined up for us. You already know about the shirts and hats - well, get ready to be impressed. Ric's bringing along several Baidarka kayak rods, a couple of big tackle bags, a high speed Catalina, even a gold Induron (I think he said 2-speed!), and more. Everyone will get a ticket. Thanks Ric!

Rick,

I have borrowed a 30 lb set up from Scott but would love to try one of the high speed setups.

It is getting really hard to think about anything else at this time in the game.

Rick,

It is getting really hard to think about anything else at this time in the game.

Yep, my boss is on vacation and "somehow" my logged in time has jumped to over 13 hrs.  And that's just on this site, not to mention some of the SoCal sites I frequent.  Gonna leave early today to play with my fishing gear before getting the kids.  Wife on travel to your neck of the woods this weekend, so having a 1.5 & 4.5 year old to myself makes it tough to do anything but focus on them.  Maybe I'll work on conditioning my liver to keep up :beer1

Looking forward to meeting you all.  Other than PAL & Rikshaw are there any other SoCal types on this trip?

We're the only ones, unless you count the crew. They are all SoCals too.

Since Paul and I are the only So-Cal fisherman on the trip, you Nor-Cal guys MAY be in for a treat.

If, and I stress IF, Paul starts working on a SKUNK like he did on our last trip... you may get to see a guy actually jump overboard and try to walk home.

Just Kidding Paul!

You know I love you man.

Questions, questions...

1. What is the earliest we can board the Islander?

2. Can we drive to the launch or do we have to cart our stuff to the boat?

3. Is there a limit on how much stuff we can bring on board?

4. Where do we long-term park (I've got a trailer, too)? What does it cost?

5. Will we be fishing in warm Pacific water as opposed to the ass cold water that we fish in NorCal? (Someone mentioned the water "cooling" to 60 degrees.) This info will determine which "fashion statement" I pack for the water--wetsuit vs. convertible pants.

6. Most Important: I'm still looking for a carpool. I'm not crazy about driving that distance alone. Won't someone PLEASE help me out?

Only 8 more days! :smt007

Ah... good times. Thanks for letting me relive the moment Ric.   :smt001

For those who weren't there, that 8-day on the RP was Ric's trip. We ran two full days down to the Uncle Sam Bank, where everyone put yellowtail on the boat. Next we headed for Alijos, where I got 2 nice grouper and a yellowfin on the kite.

My problems developed at Cedros, in the midst of a crazy yellowtail bite. As everyone around me hauled in 'tails, I lost fish after fish to break-offs, pulled hooks, tangles, equipment problems, you name it. It got so rediculous, I accepted a handoff from Ric (he was done in after pulling on fish all day). That fish fell off too.  :smt011

I was mired in frustration. Soon I couldn't do a thing right. My head was thoroughly messed up. I resorted to paying off one of the deckhands to be my personal caddy. That broke the ice - the next day I was hooked up from first light until the Capt pulled the hook to head up the line.

It was an epic trip, and I'm grateful to Ric for the invitation. I learned so much, and earned a place in the RP Polar Bear Club. I hope I'll have the opportunity to go long again next year. Hey Ric, turnabout is fair play! Look what 28 degree saltwater does to Okuma marketing managers - it's not pretty.  :smt002

1. EDIT, LATE WORD FROM SKIPPER SHANE - PLEASE BE AT THE LANDING READY TO LOAD 8:15 PM FOR A 10 PM DEPARTUREReason - they are driving the boat back from Ensenada that day and have to clear customs and install the kayak rack before they can take us onboard.

2. We'll drive to the paid parking lot at the sportfishing landing. The Islander should be at the docks in front of Fisherman's Landing. Warning - congested lot, challenging but not impossible for trailers. Easiest path is to enter on the southwest side at the roundabout. Stop in the street before you hit the exit facing Garrison St. Unload your gear. Best done with company - gear must be watched closely so it doesn't walk away. then head out that way for off-site parking if you can't find enough space for the trailer. Ask at the toll booth at the exit. Cost is about $5-10 per day. Here an aerial to check out:

We'll have to cart our gear to the boat. Wheels are helpful, although the full-size Roll-Eez might be too wide to get down the dock.

3 and 4. There isn't really a limit on how much you can bring. This is a gear intensive sport. Please store kayak specific gear such as your seat, handpump, rod holders, and other sundries in your kayak if possible. Tackle, paddles, and other wet stuff can be stored on the stern deck or possibly on the sundeck. Rods in the rod holders. For clothes, a duffle bag is best because it can be squished down to take less space.

We have 11 staterooms for 21 passengers. You should have at least one unoccupied bunk in your stateroom that can be used as shared storage space.

Here's a look at the accomodations. http://www.islander-charters.com/boatspecs/boatspecs-interior.htm Let's get to work on sorting this out now. J and K are against the engine room bulkhead and super noisy - they are reserved for obnoxious snorers. We have two couples who need their own rooms. Please put in your requests, and remember, these are tentative assigments we can change until everyone is as comfortable as possible.

I think I'll repost this in its own thread.

5. Please pack for water temperatures from 58 to 68 or maybe 70. If you normally fish in a wetsuit, I'd bring it, but also pack your lighter outfit. Remember, we have the luxury of a floating home base, so we can come in and make adjustments at our leisure.

It takes a lot more than 28 degree RSW to ruin my good looks.

I have INNER Beauty.

My Mom said so.
