Is anyone willing to share what lures they troll for stripers in the delta?  I have been using a variety of jerkbaits as well as swimbaits.  I have found that the shallow running Yozuri's don't have any action at kayak speeds.  I have been fishing 5 1/2" deep divers as well, but have had no success with them at all.  I would like to find one that runs just 5'-7' deep but has good movement.

For stripers, you frequently need to troll deeper, about 2 foot off the bottom. On a kayak, most of the traditional jerkbaits like the 6" Yozuri's, Pline Predator are not going to be trolled at a fast enough speed. Those lures really like 3mph - 4mph...which is tough to do in a kayak.

I've resorted to using 1oz - 2oz kastmasters because they have the right profile and can be trolled at slower speeds. You can also try Rat-L-traps as well.

Once technique I've been trying is using Jet divers on a 3-way swivel, to pull a floating jerkbait to the bottom but not get hung up. The Jet diver is naturally buoyant, so there's a better chance to getting everything back when you get snagged.

Thanks for the reply.  I will try your suggestions and report back.  And, you are right about trying to maintain 3-4mph.  That takes more work than I can produce for very long.

Every time someone posts anything about striper fishing, I like to time how long it takes before someone posts a striper joke. It seems people can only hold off for 3-4 hours or so.

On some of the East Coast fishing forums, the diehard bluefish aficionados leave the striper guys alone....for about 2 minutes. It's Brutal.

I don't have any experience trolling for stripers in the delta but I have used a halibut rig to troll lures in the bay a bit with some success. All you need is a 3-way swivel with a lighter line going down to a snap swivel or clip of some kind. Than I put a 4' leader to a lure and you can kinda control the depth of your trolling with the weight. Hopefully that made at least a little bit of sense.

One I kept, don’t pass up sandy beaches. The fish love the freshwater clams.

In the delta i've had success using shallow diving crank baits that have a rattle or using a rattle-trap.  The biggest stripers I've caught not trolling but drifting a live minnow or blue gill.  Buy some minnows (big ones) or catch some blue gills when you first get there with a small or piece of a redworm on a small trout hook (no weight or bobber necessary).  Just fish near the boat ramp or somewhere close to shore and put them in a bucket.  Drop the live fish down to the bottom with some kind of bottom rig works best.  I've seen others using those umbrella swimbaits rigs too.
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

True live bluegill have produced my largest striper for me I like them around 3 inches long
easy for them to get into there mouth. Discovery bay boat docks is a good place to get the bait and the game.

+1 on rattle trap, lipless crankbaits.

He's fishing delta, doesn't need to get deep.
if I'm not fishing I'm probably thinking about fishing

You can't go wrong with rat-l-traps in shallow water. 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz. For slightly deeper water up to 13-15ft, I've had some success with a Yo-Zuri Crystal 3D Minnow Deep Diver Jointed Lure in Hot Tiger color.

Now that the water is cold, stripers aren't hitting lures anymore. Bait is the way to go until the water warms up again.

I have caught a lot of stripers fishing small bucktails.  So should work on kayak trolling.  Pink has been a hot color over the years.
