I have heard from a bait shop owner that if you are fishing for salmon, you can only have barbless hooks in your possession.  I take that to mean that you cannot fish for rockfish with barbed hooks and then switch to barbless hooks in the same session.  Is that true?  How.do you experienced anglers handle this conundrum?

Do you go to shore, stow your catch and outfit for Salmon?

Thanks.

salmon on board - fish barbless for everything else
no salmon on board - fish with barbs for non-salmon

This has been replayed here a lot over the years. You can have barbed hooks on board. You can rockfish with barbs as long as you do not have salmon on board. Once you have a Salmon on board you must switch to barbless for rockfish. When you fish for salmon if you have rockfish on board you must stay within the depth restrictions for Rockfish. Or just go barbless all together and don't worry about anything but depth restrictions. You may catch a Salmon on rockfish gear with barbs and it would suck to have to let it go.

Rob nailed it. You can have barbed hooks and 50 rods in your “posession”...but if you have a salmon on the stringer, you have to switch to barbless hooks and 1 rod.
(And if you caught the salmon using barbed hooks or multiple rods, then you have to release it.)

Hoping some one can chime in. If you have a salmon on board and are now vertical fishing (drifting) for rockfish. You must have circle barbless hooks. Barbless "J" hooks are for trolling.

I might be wrong on this, but I think you only need to use the barbless circle hook if you are mooching/jigging using bait.  I believe you can use a barbless J hook if you are using lets say a plastic swimbait.

Bait + Not Trolling = Barbless circle hooks
Bait + Trolling = Barbless single shank hooks
No bait + Not trolling = Barbless single shank hooks

Section 27.80 (Salmon) states:
(3) Other Hook Restrictions. When fishing with bait in the ocean between Horse Mountain (40°05’00” N. lat.) and Point Conception, if angling by any means other than trolling, then no more than two (2) single point, single shank, barbless circle hooks shall be used.

If you're fishing for salmon south of Horse Mountain, using bait and doing anything OTHER THAN trolling, you need to use circle hooks.

I give salmon fishing lessons.   :smt001

One minor caveat for kayaks...I believe the department’s definition of “trolling” is making progress/moving without the help of prevailing current. So, if you’re actively using your paddle or pedals, you may in fact be trolling... :-) In which case, you can use barbless non-circle hooks with (or without) bait.
