I remember when Bluetooth buds first came out and I’d see people on the street or in the grocery aisle talking to themselves.  Like WTF?

Now I see more and more kayakers on the water talking to themselves or making weird poses... at the moment making me think something must be wrong.

Soon, GoPro cameras are going to be listed as essential equipment right along with a radio, pfd, and bilge pump.  A little sarcasm, yes, but the youtubers don’t think so.

Have the OGs who started NCKA considered a subscription service? $25 per year to post? With 100% of the funds raised applied towards a NCKA worthy cause (maybe even partnering w coastside to support the HMB salmon pen program)? Perhaps this would keep everyone focused on what’s important.

I do think this should be implemented.  A small fee would go a long way for a members-only report section like coastside.

All the youtubers I’ve met so far seem like pretty cool people, plus it’s like meeting movie stars

My only real complaint is the “Hey guys!” thing, wtf is that?

And what’s kancho btw?

+1. One time, my wife and I were walking at Mussel rock going to our spot. Then this YouTube guy (Fisherman’s Life) beat us to it because him and his buddy were riding bicycles with beach tires (I think electric also). Anyways, first cast and he caught a striper. So I walked towards them and tried to talk to them since I was stoked for them. I didn’t realize his buddy was filming him using a cellphone while he was kneeling down unhooking his fish. I then realized it was him at that point and he was looking at me in a funny way almost staring. I said goodbye and left thinking maybe I ruined their video shoot.

That’s how we socialize with strangers back in the days. Nowadays, I try to be cautious before I approach people.

Last year off the San Mateo coast, there was a squad of youtubers out in the area I was, and one hooked into a fish and started screaming to the camera then waving his buddies over. About 10 seconds later, a boat jumped on the radio and started flying over asking if they needed rescue assistance.. That was one of the funnier moments.    I still mistake the people on Bluetooth for people talking to me every once and a while which is pretty comical as well.

We learn so many interesting things here besides fishing

The way Uminchu Naoaki responded I thought it was about eating too many spicy hot foods

The way I see it, there are two main motivations that come into play when people post videos: (1) sharing stoke and useful information with fellow kayakers and friends who have returned the favor; and (2) promoting yourself, your “brand”, your blog, your name, your product, or even just the sport of kayak fishing in general. These two aren’t mutually exclusive, per se.

Videos posted for the first reason generally show up in the members only forums at NCKA, Coastside, etc, or get shared amongst friends and actual fishing buddies on Facebook or other platforms (note that I define friends as people you have actually interacted with in a positive way, not just people who have clicked a certain button near your name in a social media app). Videos posted for the second reason generally show up anywhere and everywhere you look so that they can be promoted and spread to the largest number of viewers; YouTube, Facebook + other social media, personal blogs, fishing clubs, etc, etc…

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say the first category of video post doesn’t really offend anyone. On the flip side… If your videos fall into the second category, maybe it’ time to reassess your priorities.

There is another factor here that I think tends to get overlooked (and if you’ve followed my posts, you know it’s something I take very seriously). There is no denying that these promotional-style videos play a part in the explosive rise in popularity of this sport we all love. With that rise in popularity comes an influx of inexperienced kayakers. I feel like some of these promotional-style videos give aspiring new kayak anglers just enough information to get themselves into very dangerous situations, and each year we read about the consequences.

I can’t help but wonder how many deaths could have been prevented if aspiring new kayak anglers had stumbled across NCKA earlier and absorbed some of the safety-forward culture rather than soaking up whatever they might find on YouTube? (For example, videos describing how to “safely” wear waders in the cold, Northern California waters!)
