You guys are amazing with your statistics and modeling

I saw this few days ago. Very interesting take from South Korea.

Thanks for that, similar info from a virologist in Taiwan about transmission but I lost that link

Most of the panic about transmission is generated from rumors and guessing about unknowns, so hearing the realities about how this is transmitted outlined in such a clear way is important

The basic point is that there’s really no mystery or magic to how viruses spread, they’re still subject to the laws of physics and nature. It’s why very simple isolation techniques work for highly contagious things like TB etc and now this version of corona virus.

And they are things that anyone can practice, little adjustments in habits and behavior that even Americans might be willing to make at this point

Today, the CA governor plans to announce the process of easing restrictions (in conjunction with Oregon and Washington)

but according to our President, he has total authority. Should we be just a little concerned that Trump thinks this?  (let alone that he says this?)

I quit believing a word out of Trump's mouth a long time ago, so I would say no.  What I would be concerned with is if his party does not check this "total power" when he tries to exercise it.

my fun US graph for the day :)

Stay At Home works at leveling out transmission speed, but scale and addition is a BIAAATCH

This is an interesting one sent to me by a friend,  it's updated every day (sometimes more) and a state can jump around on the main top graphsince that graph is at the whim of the last data reported, but the individual graphs below are more informative.

A new report is out in the news that the first known death of someone with Covid-19 in Santa Clara is now February 6.  It was originally thought to be on March 4.  As many of us have thought, Covid 19 was here sooner than the "official" statements indicate.

I know a couple of people that are all but certain they had the virus in late December/early January.

Sooner or later, we will begin hearing these reports as well.

My daughter in law is a nurse working at Valley Med in San Jose in the ICU dept.  She said things were crazy a few weeks back and warned us not to go out.  Things have stabilized a bit but now she is seeing suicide patients, old people that have fallen and even some young (30 to 40)  covid patients that were healthy.

Stay safe!!!

As of today, one out of every thousand New Yorkers has died of Covid-19. Wrap your head around that.

Thankfully weÂ’re doing much better than that here in CA, but we donÂ’t live in a bubble.

I keep seeing different versions of this analogy, and I think it fits:

Opening up some areas while keeping others locked down is like roping off a peeing section in the swimming pool.

It's more like having 3000 different swimming pools, identifying which pools are the peeing pools, which are the non-peeing pools, cleaning up the pools one at a time, and only letting the people from the non-peeing pools move around between other non-peeing pools.  As more peeing pools are made pee-free, they can now participate in the non-peeing pool alliance.  If they slip and let pisser into their pool. they go back on the peeing pool roster.

I think that sums up the basic difference in closers vs. openers.

I guess that’s the idealistic version of the swimming pool analogy, but the truth is Americans are still traveling domestically and some of them are undoubtedly carrying the virus without symptoms.

Unless/until we’re able to test every single person before they hop on an airplane or head out for a drive, we’re all in the same pool - or 3,000 pools that share common plumbing if you’d rather think of it that way.

On a lighter note, it’s hard to think of this analogy without picturing Bill Murray taking a big bite out of a turd-shaped candy bar fished from a swimming pool. (Gotta love Caddy Shack...)

interesting perspective:

The Dawn of a New Era

A Paradigm Shift Accelerated by the Coronavirus

Even before the arrival of COVID-19, humanity found itself stuck in several crises at once. The current shock delivered by the coronavirus could accelerate a paradigm shift that was already underway. It may result in a better and more sustainable world.
