Santa Cruz must fall into one of those I imagine

Looked like three or four yaks in the kelp off of pleasure point

With social distancing of course

I personally am getting pretty sick and tired of those who think they can do whatever the hell they want with absolute disregard for the health and well being of others.

And I am personally getting tired of getting lumped into a class of people who have absolute disregard. Public health officials have outlined what you can and can’t do and in most places kayaking and recreational fishing is allowed and fine. But if it doesn’t suit someone’s personal preference that everybody stay inside his or her house other than to go to the Petri dish that is the grocery store, that person now feels emboldened to call out others publicly, in a hostile way, with all the subtlety of a 14”dildo. It’s obnoxious.
Agreed.

It’s funny how so many put so much “passion” and concern into current events with the idea of “saving lives” and “caring for the community” but I haven’t heard anything from them on diseases that actually kill lots of lives every year. The corona virus still has a very high survivability rate and those that are most susceptible are the ones at risk to many other disease processes. Heck, the common flu infects millions every year, kills thousands EVERY YEAR and no one bats an eye. Ebola has nearly a 50% death rate but you didn’t have the outcry you do now. Not to mention things like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc. I get those aren’t contagious, but you all are so adamant about “saving lives” why haven’t you been out spoken on those topics? They kill far more people than corona virus ever will. Common sense and logic should tell you we’ve had this disease in our country for a lot longer than the media would lead you to believe. It is not spreading like wildfire like the media wants you to think. We just have a diagnosis and test for an upper respiratory infection that has been going around for months. Stop with all the doom and gloom.

So what's happening in NY right now is no big deal?

Do you know about how this event is overwhelming medical systems?

These are real questions.  I'm not belittling or mocking anyone.

I'm glad to see that everyone is getting involved in the discussion because this virus is serious business. Lots if people are going to get very sick and many will die. Not trying to belittle that in any way.  I'm am however still trying to connect the dots as to how any of these events are relevant to a guy sitting alone in the middle of the ocean on a kayak.  It doesn't ad up.

Yes, we already have all of those things stressing the fuck out of our health care system.

Do we really need to add thousands of more corona virus patients to already over-crowded hospitals?

Do you know what asymptomatic means and how long one can have the virus and be asymptomatic?

Since everyone wants to compare this to the flu, how many more deaths per year from the flu do you think there would be if you could be running around spreading the flu to people for 10 days or more without even knowing you have it?

And just like Eric mentioned, these are serious questions and I'm not trying to be a smart-ass.

It seems like there's way too many people "on both sides" of this that are just regurgitating things they read on the internet without giving any thought to it.

True.

I don't see any reason to question the local health officials.  If what you want to do is allowed where you are and where you want to go, then go ahead.  If it's not, then don't.  Stay away from other people, practice social distancing, practice CDC recommended hygiene procedures, and try to be kind.

The issue is not someone sitting in the middle of the ocean.
If that person could snap his fingers and magically appear there from his living room it would not be an issue at all.
The issue lies in getting there and crossing the paths of others.
And yea, one guy might live on the beach and walk 100 feet to the waters edge, but if he can be on the ocean then everyone can be on the ocean.
And if they made an exception for that rare individual how can it be policed?
Instead of one guy out there you now have 100 guys out there all under the guise of living at the waters edge. 99 of them got there somehow, crossing the paths of others.
Do you send someone out to check the validity of their claims?
Believe me, I'd much rather be fishing.
I have already cancelled plans with other NCKA members fishing, hunting and socially. And yea, it sucks big time.
But I gotta put on my big boy pants, pull up my boot straps and suck it up for now.
Either this soon will pass or this will take a lot longer to pass than expected.
Most of that depends on our behavior now.
So for now I'll sit out and do my part so I can get back to the things I love sooner than later.

I didn’t once say it wasn’t a big deal. Re-read my post if you have to. I’m aware medical systems are saturated, they already were prior to this virus, but that’s another story. Going fishing may not be essential, but that doesn’t mean a person does not care about others and it doesn’t mean they are spreading the virus.

The common flu is 20 times less deadly than COVID-19.
Ebola infected 11 Americans from 2014-2016.

If you're infected and asymptomatic, and then you go fishing, you could very well be spreading it. That's what's scary. None of us know for sure whether or not we have.

Like Eric you’re missing my point. With my profession I’m well aware of what asymptomatic means and have been well versed in what this virus does. If you’ve compared this to the flu, then you should be well aware of the numbers and how they compare to corona. Look at the past few years. I don’t watch the news, and quite frankly don’t believe a word they say. If the facts give me something to worry about I’ll change my ways, until then, I’ll keep on living my life as I see fit.

The first case in the US was reported on January 20, 2020 in the State of Washington.  (10 weeks ago)

Today's numbers from the CDC are 214,482 case and 5,094 deaths in the US.

So I agree, it is not spreading like a wildfire.

WHO reports 3.4% as of March 3. I know these numbers are changing rapidly so this may be slightly out of date. But erring on the side of caution is the better thing to do here. You're downplaying it, which is what Trump did, and which is why it got out of control in the States.
