All I'm saying is it makes no sense.  It's a lot safer going out and catching dinner than I am buying it at a grocery store.   Fish from the ocean veggies from my garden protects more people than their plan.

Have you ever been to SC harbor on opening day?
What a cluster F#$K! So many people it's a joke.
Yes you can close the ramp, but if you take away one means of launching and not the other then the other will get packed with people wanting to fish the opener.
The entire idea is to stay at home to help prevent the spread.
It's a pretty simple concept.
I have no problem giving up things I'd rather be doing now to be able to do them in the future and so that others may enjoy a future as well.
I personally am getting pretty sick and tired of those who think they can do whatever the hell they want with absolute disregard for the health and well being of others.

Not sure if they closed moss landing and monterey harbors ? If not, they probably should. It does turn in to a cluster fuck. I dont want to imagine all the people that flock from hrs away from this location and with even more people out of work and nothing to do ? May or may not be worse than it normally is.  A hard pill to swallow but it helps take the temptaion away.

It makes perfect sense. You can still fish for other species, but salmon season brings out crowds, and that's what we need to avoid now. This is a smart move. I was reading - I forget where - that deaths are going to peak in April and by July be very low, if we follow the SIP guidelines. That means most likely we'll be able to fish for salmon at the peak of the season. The wait will be worth it on all fronts.

I understand that.  They have already closed the launch ramps and the charter boats are shut down.  That takes care of the crowds. Shutting down us solo fisherman  is silly. And actually forces us to have more human contact at the store buying food.

Fish for something else then. Salmon is closely managed and monitored in season after several rounds of meetings setting seasons up and down the entire US coast using mountains of data from all the major rivers with the set goals of giving commercial, recreational, and tribal fishermen the most opportunity while giving the next generation of salmon the best chance to propagate.

With the ramps closed and the counters unable to do their jobs, tptb would be unable to make changes in season, thereby denying recreational fishermen the opportunity to get their share of the salmon. Closing it as an in season change will allow them to increase seasons or limits on the back end.

And if you’re hungry you can still fish for something else. It’s when CA decides to shut down all fishing that we have a problem. Not when they make changes to a heavily regulated species like salmon.

And I am personally getting tired of getting lumped into a class of people who have absolute disregard. Public health officials have outlined what you can and can’t do and in most places kayaking and recreational fishing is allowed and fine. But if it doesn’t suit someone’s personal preference that everybody stay inside his or her house other than to go to the Petri dish that is the grocery store, that person now feels emboldened to call out others publicly, in a hostile way, with all the subtlety of a 14”dildo. It’s obnoxious.

But what about guys who fish solo in their skiffs? Everyone wants to be the exception to the rule.
Besides, delaying salmon season isn't a ban on fishing. It's a temporary action to help with the SIP guidelines.
If the salmon season stays open, you're going to have kayakers parking in residential neighborhoods, pissing off locals who don't want their street crowded with outsiders during this time of pandemic. Can you blame them?

As for going to the store, stock up on rice, beans, potatoes, and canned tomatoes and you're set for a while. No need to go too often.

Wait until July. It will be worth it.

I might buy into that if everything in your kitchen actually came from the ocean.
I am assuming the catsup and mayo in the fridge didn't.
Toothpaste from the ocean? Hardly.
Like it or not you will be going to the store.
Go there, get what you need and go home.

Counters unable to do they're jobs? I've been catching salmon in California for over 50 years. Can't recall anybody counting my fish.

Honestly. I think rockfish season should be moved back at least two to three weeks. There will be just as many people migrating( if not more )from long distances to fish this even more now that salmon season is closed. I live 12 and 20 minutes from moss and monterey and i am willing to sacrafice.

I have more than enough projects around the house and family to catch up with to last me more than a month.  :smt001 :smt001

My 2 cents.

I run into counters half a dozen times a year and am on a first name basis with a few of them.  How have you avoided the creel checks?

I think it comes down to where you launch. I’ve never encountered a checker (or a warden of any sort for that matter) at the two spots I launch most often, but I have had my kill bag checked on the water several times.

Well, it usually takes about 10 day for an emergency action to become official with DFW regs (like closing salmon season). This seems similar to the annual exercise of establishing our salmon season regs.

But I agree with Gary and I’m going fishing (in my kayak by myself, five minutes from my house). I promise I won’t talk to anybody, stop along the way, get within 6ft of another human, and I won’t be a burden to first responders. I sure as heck ain’t going to Costco/Safeway/Whole Foods/Trader Joes/Target/Walmart/Luckys/Grocery Outlet.

Looks like it's officially closed for the month of April: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Salmon#recreational
Fingers crossed this all blows over in a month or two and we have a full summer of salmon fishing.

Is rockfish open?

Looks like there are some yaks out in the kelp around Santa Cruz right now
