Ok it’s page 3.

My opinion, which along with $2 will buy a cup of coffee-

There is nothing wrong with traveling so long as precautions are taken to not interact directly in your destination or along the way. Take food, fill your tank before you go, maintain social distancing, and go fishing.

This poll isn’t worth anything because the poll itself very clearly suggests the answer.  I won’t bother voting.

To get called out for not taking the pandemic seriously is laughable. It’s far more dangerous to everyone involved to go to the grocery store down the street than it is to go fishing two counties over.  Sure, you can pile on the “what ifs” and we can go straight down that slippery slope, but we could do that with every single thing in life and if that’s the case you shouldn’t leave your house ever for any reason.  It’s unhelpful. Small, calculated, manageable risks are fine, we take them every single day, and this pandemic doesn’t change anything as far as the calculus is concerned.

The most reasonable argument against traveling, with proper precautions, is the example the traveler is setting for others.  That is solved by simply not telling anybody what you are up to.  Nobody knows, nobody gets the wrong idea.  Of course this argument against travel assumes other people are idiots incapable of taking proper precautions and is extremely pessimistic in its view of humanity.  Maybe that’s not wrong, but it’s not how I see things. I think most people want to isolate and follow the spirit of the rules if not the letter.  Keep your distance and don’t touch anything.  Most people are good, honest people who take the pandemic seriously and who want to stop the spread, but who also want to maintain some normalcy in their lives, no matter how small, for their own mental health. Fishing (and kayaking, surfing, etc.) provides a low risk way to do just that.

Without diving into all the what-ifs (there are many) - I agree that the biggest issue is probably the example you set for other (perhaps less informed) citizens just by being out and about instead of at home sheltering in place.

Now is probably a good time for all of us to lead by example, huh?

Man, I’ve been wanting to get my Ling-on for a couple months now, with no fish in he freezer I was looking forward to April 4th.
As this pandemic unfolded I was not sure if  April 4 was ago or no go?
I even e-mailed Fish and Wildlife to get their take on it. As I understood it , it’s legal but ur movement is the issue.
I could justify fishing by its exercise, getting a food source, social distancing should be no problem, the list goes on...
But my gut told me NO!
Disappointed, Hell Yea! I Love that rush  of pulling something big, wondering what it is, seeing color, net job, and aahhhh score!!!!
But what gives me the OK to fish when I’m supposed to be at home?
Hell, they cancelled the OLYMPICS! I can wait a month or two to get my selfish fishing addiction itched. :smt013  :smt005
For me there’s a little moral thing going on  and it is a personal decision here, so I voted NO
I have patience and the goal here is to flatten the curve  so for me  as hard as it is ,I will wait.

Glad I don’t have to travel outside my “local” area to fish

On the other hand when I hop in my car and drive to the coast to surf or fish, at what point am I putting myself or anyone else at risk? And what’s the difference if it’s in the county I live in or two counties away?

Because it is doing something, and we must do something!   And if you don’t do something you must be shamed!

But we don’t stop and ask if doing that particular “something” is effective or necessary.

Here's the question again:

Is it OK to travel outside of your local area for recreational fishing?

"Most people are good, honest people who take the pandemic seriously and who want to stop the spread, but who also want to maintain some normalcy in their lives, no matter how small, for their own mental health. Fishing (and kayaking, surfing, etc.) provides a low risk way to do just that."

Not seeing the part where travel outside of your local area is required to fulfill your needs for maintaining some normalcy in your life.

Could you please explain the shaming you're referring to?

Isn't it worth having this discussion?

Before the shit really hit the fan, if it has yet, I made a practice run to OP.  I loaded the yak, unloaded, launched, fished, landed, loaded, and drove home all without touching a foreign surface, interacting with another human, basically without introducing anything new into my "system." I felt at the time very at ease  about going fishing during SIP.  Of course it is possible, but is it a good example?  Prob not.  I'm staying in, but fuck this disease!!

You too, Paul.  I'm glad you're taking the kid surfing.  Do you plan to drive further if a hot break happens up or down the coast?

Look - I am interested in people taking a hard look at how their own activities and those of others can hinder the effort underway right now (basically on the entire planet) to prevent further complication from this pandemic.

Please try this:  say to yourself, "it's not about me."  Then think about the question again.

Is it OK during this pandemic to travel outside of your local area for recreational fishing or surfing or any other solitary activity?
