I’m going to stay out of this one because this isn’t a simple yes or no.  If I go on with my opinion, then I’m going to lose some friends on here.

Everything the guy says in that video about covid and ards is true, one important distinction he muddies up is between whether this is contact/droplet(somebody coughs or sneezes on you or you pick it up on your hands) or airborne infection(drifting in the air) He’s saying it’s airborne but it isn’t clear yet from the studies, and even if it is it doesn’t mean you get it riding in a car or being out in the fresh air

In the hospital environment corona was treated until now as contact/droplet, we are currently playing it very safe and going with airborne

I watched again and he said it's not air born because if it's, the mask we wear for protection "don't do sh*t".  See video at 6:45 time frame.

I could’ve sworn he said something like “Guys, this is airborne”

And if masks don’t do shit maybe I should quit my job

Yes, he did but he meant it can travel through air in droplet form but the virus cannot live in the air.  See video at 6:40.

Not much of a poll when the pollster makes the "right" answer clear. Riding in a car and keeping distance when launching and fishing will not expose anybody to anything.

And I agree with bluekayak that getting groceries is the biggest threat.  Here's me on my last trip to Costco. It was like the Red Sea parting everywhere I walked in the store...

I have been pretty much self isolated with my wife and two sons for over 2 weeks now. I took a leave without pay for two weeks now because i consider myself high risk and my job requires me to commute to different work sites with different employees daily.
We have only been out of the house maybe 3 times for necessities. My wife and eldest son luckily can work from home. My youngest son was just laid off from Tesla the beginning of this week. We have been working as a team accomplishing our daily goals .
Unfortunately it is time to return to work to pay the bills. Taking as many precautions to keep my family and co-workers as safe as possible.

I turned down a boat halibut trip the other day considering the amount of people on the boat and the proximity to how close we would all be . Even though these are long time friends i don't want to risk my families health not knowing who they have been in contact with. We are all sacrificing for the well being of ourselves, family and friends.

There is a lot of good information  shared on how to protect yourself. Please heed it .

Working to flatten the curve !

Here's the question again:

- Is it OK to travel outside of your local area to fish?

I’m still seeing people not complying with the six foot distance requirement. Still think a lot of us are taking problem as serious as we should.

The health director for San Mateo County has asked everyone to stay in their neighborhood - that puts fishing out of range for me.  If anyone is lucky enough to fish out of their backyard, go for it (Keener, good for you!).  I won't be able to see you or feel jealous from Menlo Park.

If everyone who had the option could err on the side of caution for 3 weeks, we could put Covid transmission on pause.  In that time frame, more tools will come online that will make it easier to fight the spread: diagnostic tests (go Cepheid & Thermo Fisher!), more masks and protective equipment, possibly tracking apps like China/S Korea are using (controversial for Americans).

Sucks, but is the right thing to do.

This is a tough one. But my thought is that we should not be traveling to fish. To much chance of accidentally transporting the virus to new places and new people. If I think “it’ll be ok this once” there’s probably thousands of other people thinking the same and acting the same. It really is too bad with the ocean opening soon and spring freshwater fishing getting real good too.

I voted no.

No judgments on those who think and feel differently.

I think if I was single ,no kids ,not borderline diabetic  and not a couple years from sixty, I might have voted yes. But I live with others.

Supposedly we as a group  ,brag about safety on the water , we take precautions , how is this different ?

We owe it to our families to launch and head out safe for a day on the water, wear the right gear, have a radio ,PFD, compass ,whistle ,flag.

Could we consider the SIP, social distancing, washing and sanitizing our safety gear for a bit, couple weeks ,a month? IDK ?

I know some of us wont fish with others that take unnecessary chances or go out ill equipped or skirt areas of the DFW regs.

How is this different ?

No amount of belief in something makes it a fact . But it is a fact its  highly contagious. Are the precautions needed ?...overblown by some it`s been said ,under emphasized by others ,perhaps.

A person might go out ten times during the SIP , maybe a hundred , but that one time .At the very least is that person willing to expose loved ones .

Honestly , I`m apprehensive to even post this. I`m not one of the cool guys. I`m not hardcore, I dont have a clique I belong to.I`m so far out of the loop LOL.

I`m just rambling and its not personal ,its just food for thought. I made my decision based on my situation. Everyone has to make theirs according to their conscience .

And I so want to be wrong...

P.S. for the record my wife Wendy is Senior checker at a Safeway so....there`s that too. maybe she gets exposed .I get exposed ..I go out....

I appreciate your perspective, thanks. A lot to think on in all of this.

Yes, go fish by yourself.
No, try not to travel very far.
We all should be pretending we have the virus at this point, so using common sense, I think it is safe to go out for a hike, go surf and go fish.
Put gloves on at the gas station, pack a lunch, don't sneeze on anyone, etc.
Fishing is one of the rare activities one can do and still be self isolated from everyone.
Good discussion and tough question. One of those questions you have to ask, if everyone did it, then what.
But we're not talking about everyone, just recreational fishers... and a form of fishing done solo. Surf fishing, kayak, etc.

I could leave my house at 2 AM and be launching at ARW by just after 6 AM. The Suburban has a 600 mile range, so if I fill up the day before leaving, a gas stop is not needed. I’d be jigging swimbaits, so no stop for bait. If I got off the water at 3 PM, I have a decent thermos and brown bags, so I would not need to stop for coffee or food and could be home by 7:30 PM. In all, no stops, about 9 hours of fishing, and socially distant the entire time.

I floated this idea by my wife, who reminded me that there is SIP order in place and what kind of example would I be setting. Truckee is begging people to not come here, but I would be leaving and going to the bay... She made it very clear she was not a fan of my idea. Being that she’s the medical professional in the family, she is smarter than me on this subject.

I really want to chase some halibut, but it looks like I’ll be chasing koc’s and trout at Stampede down the road from my house instead. I can see validity on both sides of the argument, but the right play for me is to stick close to home for the time being, even though I really hate that idea.
Usually out of the running for Husband of the Year by January 4th of each year...
