So all this talk of closing beaches and parking lots has me wondering if we'll even be able to park and launch during the summer. Obviously there are bigger fish to fry right now, but fishing would be a great distraction from all this, assuming we're allowed access to the ocean this summer.

Thoughts?

Unless they prohibit kayak from launching, I will go out for my "water therapy" once in awhile.

Its one thing to close lakes and state parks but closing the Ocean is a whole different story. Harbors are still open and not all launches are state parks. I think you would just have to be smart about it. I think it will come down towards all of our attitudes towards enforcement. If you aren't being a d... and respecting the enforcement and simply telling them you are feeding your family there won't be many issues. That is of course if people are not going out in groups. That being said this might be a solo fishing summer. Be safe out there and don't go beyond your limits. As of right now they don't want anyone meeting up with friends here in Monterey. I have just been sticking to areas I know very well and never leave with out my radio and phone.
Get out there and Fish!

Yes we`ll have a Summer.

It may not be like ones in the past.

Other than the party boat guys and kayak shops/rentals and guides etc they`ll take a big hit.

I don`t think anybody that does it for hobby or sport will melt.

My outlook is if the only worry is not being able to fish, I must have it pretty good.

I worry about my wife working at Safeway more than kayak fishing right now

I know, this is a first-world problem, I suppose. But it's a big thing for us all. We'll see what the coming months bring.

Same.

I've been going into work, but I'm pretty much the only person there, I'm in a negative pressure lab by myself, and due to the nature of my work I've always washed my hands like 30 times a day....but my wife works in the pharmacy at Wal-Greens and, other than wearing gloves, it's pretty much business as usual there.

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

Arrive early, go solo.  Probably will have to park in the neighborhoods if beach parking lot is closed.

Who knows how long that will be ok for, you'd probably only get hassled on your way back in.

I tried to get away from the crowds this past weekend at OP, parking lot was almost empty when I arrived but was a zoo when I left.  And I chose that spot over others to specifically get away from the crowds.

I read the other day that the whole town of Bolinas is “Closed”. While not a legal action as far as I can tell, I will respect the resident’s wishes.

IMHO by summer, things will be pretty much back to normal.

Here's a pretty good article with predictions by someone who has a good track record, as he got the numbers right wrt China:

I also think his point that "the world needs to control the panic, and abide by the reasonable social distancing measures" is exactly right.

So far I've seen more kayaks at the places I've been but it's probably because they don't have anything else to do. Many appear to be new to the sport so perhaps they
are/will be more concentrated in the bay?

Just realized the other day that there were no party boats around, this combined with less fishing pressure though the season should lead to more fish to fry next season!

Closing of the beaches and parks especially the GGNRA is shocking to me but I guess people were unable to keep from clumping up in groups.

Silver Lining perhaps.... was also thinking how this will effect Ocean and Timber Coves up this way ,wondering what their plans are , if Stillwater North ,Ft.Ross and Salt Point are closed for RF

SWN and other hike in from the highway spots shouldn't be affected..... I hope.

Bolinas has been that way since at least 1978.

I just read Maui, where my mama is from, is closed as well...I'm sure they enjoy the break...

The State of Hawaii has imposed a two week quarantine on all incoming people (planes and cruise lines).  This means if you fly in to any island in Hawaii, you will be quarantined to your hotel room or a home for 2 weeks.  Hawaii is also restricting inter-island transportation

I was wondering the same thing. It is a Sonoma County Regional Park though, so I allegedly it'll be closed.

I'm pretty bummed about the parks. I try to hike 20ish miles a week after work for mental health reasons more so than physical. I did the neighbor today instead. Not nearly as helpful.
