Carpooled down with Marmite and met up with Ark and Justyakit at dawn. It was a little breezy but the water was flat and calm to launch with ease. Justyakit (a.k.a James) got a head start and was out in the water fishing . He doesn't a VHF so we couldn't get  a report on how he was doing at his spot.

Ark and I followed Marmite (Doug) out to the edge of the kelp beds just out side of the forbidden zone of Point Lobos, since Doug has all the cordanence marked on his GPS, we would be sure we would be clear of the reserve. I baited my hooks with my regular choice of  fresh bait (whole squid) and dropped down. I immediately gets strikes and my rod goes bendo I set the hook and feel a head shake then a dead stop. I was blown into the kelp forest and ended up getting snagged up and loosing the fish and  my leader.

I tied on a new leader with a 7/0 Gami and a treble hook stinger and rebated the hooks and headed across the way towards Carmel Beach to see if I could fined a hungry Halibut in about 60ft of water. No luck so I started toward the kelp beds near the point,Carmel side, to see if I could intice a ling or other rock fish. I start to paddle while dragging my squid at 30 pulls to hook into some nice size blues, around two to three pound, till I lost my treble stinger hook that left me with my 7/0 gamgatsu. By this time the fog started to roll in and the watter started to get  a little choppy . I was in a 100ft of water and a flat bottom. I still had a half eaten squid body left on the 7/0 and to lazy to re-rigged I dropped down to the bottom…tap, tap, and fish-on! I thought  I had a gopher cod but turned out it was a nice size 10inch sand dab. I said to myself…cool a bonus  I didn't expect to catch any dabs out her especially with a 7/0 hook. I couldn't believe Those dabs were swallowing this big hook. So I cut up some squid into some strips and continued to work the area for eight more dabs before I seen some birds dive bombing .

I  switch to a liter rod that was set up for salmon, and started to drag a whole squid toward ware the bird was working. All of a sudden my rod goes bendo and I get excited thinking it was a salmon . It turned out to be a 15inch olive. I bagged it and continued to drag squid at 30 pulls and continued to catch olive. Needless to say I had a lot of action and ended the day with nine olives bigest at 19inches and one blue totaling over 30lbs of  fish dressed.

I still haven't up grade my digital camera but heres  a couple of pics of my catch.

Great action Alien.

Why didn't you send one of the dabs down as ling bait?

Nice haul Alien, next time maybe I should follow you out!

Pacifico, I did catch a small dab out there a few weeks ago and had a nice fat copper nail it.

Pacifico ,

I was just having so much fun catching the olives. There were times when my rod was slammed and I had trouble taking it out of the rod holder. It was fast action and lots of fish. It was a nice change from the regular stringer of blues, gopher, or coppers. These Olives were clean! Not a single worm or parasite.

My ultimate goal, is to have stringer of Vermilion :smut002

http://www.amazon.com/Uniden-Atlantis-Hand-held-2-Way-Marine/dp/B000E99WOC/ref=sr_1_26/102-4146903-0020939?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1184640382&sr=8-26

i got a limit of olives, black/blue? and a copper, mostly around 20inchers. olives everywhere where i was fishing, got 2 undersized lings, no reds. least got enough fish to last me a week. had fish chowder for dinner, planning to make cod ceviche and steamed cod through out this week.

Hi James,

It would work. The Uniden 250 sound like agreat deal. I have the West Marine VHF250. I like the AM/FM radio channel option and the family channel . When I bought mine it was $199.00 West Marine had them on sale last week for  $149.00  I'm going to see if there still on sale and if they are I'll get another one. One is just not enough. like to have contact with home base when I'm out fishing and camping with family.

Ark, Doug, and I drove down to BH  yesterday after noon to check it out. Looks Good!

Hey alex

WTG!! Where did you catch the dabs? I bought a Uniden 250 from Cabelas. Get the one with the rechargeable battery not the one with the battery case which hold #6 AA's. The case leaks really bad.

Right on guys!
Seems like the dabs must be in there thick. I got a few on accident that day also. Probably should've sent one back down as ling bait. Next time I'll do it for sure. I just wanted to keep the ones I caught for dinner...greedy.

I need to get a VHF still. I was wondering how you were playing music in your yak when you paddled up. Makes me want to get one of those WM VHF250s!

I think the WM VHF250 is the all around radio. It features 1-88 Chanel's U.S.,Canada, and international waters.

-weather channels

-emergency Ch16/9

-family radio service band

-standard AM broadcast band (500-1800KHz) lets me listen to news, music, and sports

-standard FM (87.5-108MHz)

-aircraft broadcast reception if you want to listen in on aircraft to ground transmition

-triple and dualwatch operation

-normal scan

-transmitter power level select 1, 2.5, and 5 watts

-channel select keys

-submersable to 1 meter up to 30 minutes

-battery power level display and tone

-battery save-during specific transmit operations, the radio powers down to extend battery life.

It comes with charge cradle, AC adapter, DC adapter, Lithium Ion battery pack, Alkaline battery case, belt clip, and wrist strap.

Very durable and low maintenance. I just missed the sale. Now there back to $199.99 :smut013 Great VHF radio and worth the Money.

Hey alien,
How did you paint your screen name onto your kayak? Is there a special type of paint? I want to do the same on my kayaks.

Thanks!

PK,

There store bought from West Marine. $20.00 for a pack I think it was four sets of letters and numbers. If you don't mind the color scheme you could have a set. Let me know and I'll bring them down next time I come down.
