Since the wife was at work I had the perfect opportunity to take the kids to the tide pools for some shellfish ID and foraging. Happy new year everyone and hope you all enjoy the video.

Thank you for posting  :smt001

Just out of curiosity, does California require a fishing license to harvest mussels?  I know there is a 10lb limit (in shell), but since where you are is North of the line that requires an Ocean license...

Yes, a license is required.

"It tastes like yummy." You cant get a better opinion than that ! Looks like a great day on the water.

Make sure you don't use any tools to remove mussels.
Tools are prohibited for mussel foraging.  You can only remove them by hand without using any tools.
I witnessed several people getting tickets for using tools.

That is great to get your kids involved early. I've been taking my boys out for years and they still enjoy going out with me to harvest mussels and play in the tide pools.

I would caution you on carrying your little one on your back while walking on the rocks though. One small slip can easily cause you to lose your balance with the added weight.

Almost broke my femur last year while harvesting mussels. First time I ever fell and it was a bad one. No bueno  :smt009

This is a confusing comment. North of what line???

There is a loop hole if you are creative. I would also recommend gloves it makes it a lot easier on your fingers.

one last technical question regarding the area (appears to be Asilomar)..."I ain't from around there" :smt003....  The marine sanctuary and reserve language to me is very confusing.  Where is it legal to fish and where is it not in the area?  I assume the area where the video was taken is legal.
