I'm coming down for the tourny on Saturday morning. Can someone recommend a hotel to stay at that is near MBK?

And, more importantly, does anybody know of any bars in the area that might be showing the fights (UFC) on Saturday night?

Thanks in advance!

UFC 73 was last weekend... I don't think there's a UFC this weekend... repeats on Spike maybe...

How near do you need to be? I always crash in Marina at the Best Western. Cheap , clean and 1 block from the beach. Decent perch fishing there as well. I would guess it is about 10 minutes from MBK.

It is the first one on the list, Dunes Road. Again you are not going to get much in the way of WAF points but it is clean and cheap. Walk to Marina State Beach and walk across the street to a decent restaurant , I forget the name though.

Hey RockHopper,
When considering a vacation in Monterey, there are many options.
You can stay in Marina, Seaside, Monterey, Pacific Grove, or Carmel (or Pebble Beach if you got some $$). I listed the cities listed from North to South. The price of accomodations generally follows the same order, with Marina being the cheapest and Carmel being the most expensive. Marina is about 10 minutes from MBK and Carmel is about 15 minutes away.

When my family visits, they usually stay in Marina. But that’s just because I live in Marina and they want to be close to my house. They really like the Best Western Beach Dunes Inn. It is right on the beach. Decent perch fishing within a few hundred yards is always a plus! Other nearby options are the Comfort Inn, the Quality Inn, and Marina Dunes Resort (this is probably the fanciest accomodations in Marina. Right on the beach and excellent rooms, service, etc.).
There are a ton of other hotels in Marina too; I'd check expedia and other websites. Downside about Marina is that there isn't much going on and not much within walking distance of those beach hotels…just AJ Spurs which is within Marina Dunes Resort. And, of course, a Dennys.

There are a lot of hotels in Seaside. Especially along Fremont Street. Fremont continues to parallel HWY 1 into Monterey. They have all the standards like Econo Lodge, HoJos, Economy Inn, etc. There is one hotel on the beach in Seaside, off Canyon Del Rey exit. The Best Western Beach Resort. This is a sweet spot to stay and shorefish. And, if the surf was calm enough, you'd be able to launch and paddle over to MBK and back! This hotel might actually be on the border of Monterey, instead of Seaside. Not sure. There's also an Embassy Suites.
Here's the Beach Resort and Embassy Suites in the background: http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=200508230&mode=sequential&flags=0&year=2005

Within the city of Monterey you have a lot of options to consider. You can stay in Downtown, or near the Wharf, or on Cannery Row, or up on the hill near the Del Monte Mall (commonly referred to as Carmel Hill). Again, I'd browse the hotel websites on the net first. But, for downtown, ones I can recommend are the Downtown Marriot, Portola Plaza, the Monterey Hotel, and the Mariposa Inn. Most of the downtown hotels are within walking distance of the Wharf (and MBK is located about 200 yards north of the Wharf). Here's Wharf 2 and MBK: http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=200508251&mode=sequential&flags=0&year=2005
For Cannery Row, there are some really nice hotels but they come at a price. There's the Monterey Plaza Hotel, the Monterey Bay Inn, the Spindrift Inn, Cannery Row Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Days Inn. There's a ton of em down there.
There are a lot of hotels up on the hill too. Off Munras Ave, across from the Mall. There is also a new disc golf course right there too…I've only played it a couple times but its really nice. Some of the ones I can recall are Munras Inn, Knights Inn, Comfort Inn.

Good luck in Carmel. There are tons of hotels and B+Bs and stuff. Most are pricey. Carmel is actually split into 4 different sections: Carmel proper, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Highlands, and Carmel Valley. Carmel-by-the-Sea is a good place to send the family to spend the day shopping, eating, playing, etc.

Not sure about the UFC 74 but it should be available at one of the bars downtown. Most of the bars are located on Alvarado St, which is kind of like the main drag/strip for Monterey. Some of the better ones include Britannia Arms, The Mucky Duck, Monterey Live, Lalapalooza, and Cibos. I'd check the sports bars to see if they have the fights: Knuckles, Characters, Jersey's (awesome cheesesteaks!). There are also some good bars in Cannery Row.

I know this is a lot of info but hopefully its helpful. Like I said, there are a lot of options in this area. Its good to start researching before making a decision on where to stay. And I definitely don't recommend just driving down here and looking for a hotel the night before the tourney.
I'm looking forward to the tourney. And meeting a lot of NCKAers, as I have not been able to make it to any of the previous events or get-togethers. And, since the tourney is on a Sunday, maybe some of us should hookup and fish on Saturday.

Good luck,
PK

when we go to Monterey, we always stay in the Monterey Hostel.  Its dirt cheap ($25 per person), pretty clean, has a kitchen and is usually loaded with young foreign tourists (lots of European girls  :smt002 ).  We really like the cheap and enjoy meeting other ppl...  The location is also good, its just up the street from the aquarium.

So if cheap is your game and you don't mind a dorm atmosphere, call soon, the summer months can be tough to get a bed.
