I take 2 rods, a heavyish one and the bass rod. The bass rod is the most fun and frequently outdoes the other one.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Abu Garcia vendetta 7-6 mh with diawa aird 100 and 30lb braid has landed many ocean fish for me. I use it for 2 oz weights.

I always use bass rods. built tough enough. Reels not so much. upgrade to a heavier reel on the bass rod... Salmon, lings no problem...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I have a shimano reel on my bass rod when I went for rockfish. Now I take it to Alaska and do silver salmon on it and it works great. Even got a 20 pound plus king salmon on it back in 2017.

I use it because I can't feel the bite with all my nerve damage in my hands and using a bigger rod that charters have, I can't feel a thing.

Been using bass gear since the 90’s when the regs pushed us shallow and ganions were outlawed.

Reels that served me well: abu ambassaduer 5500, Calcutta 50 and 250, Daiwa Coastal 200.  Also look at the Okuma Komodo 200 SS, stainless internals outta last longer pulling double duty.

I have a 5500 ,Calcutta 200 and a Tranx 200 , Lexa 300 for BC’s and a couple Penn Battles and a Shimano Baitrunner that should pair up on the spin rod

The only issue is the bass rods aren't rated for the weights you typically need in the salt.  Can totally use them they're just going to flex alot and likely break sooner.

I wanted to use bass rods as I hate the long handle styling found on many salt rods but I couldn't find any rated close to high enough.  Maybe some swimbait rods but then they get pretty long.

Ended up with a Phenix M1 inshore.  With a lexa300 it's a pretty sweet rockfish setup.

After I slammed my tailgate on my Trevala, I started using my old Daiwa flipping stick, works great for rockies and butts.
