If the drift and wind is slow enough, and I'm in the shallower water (<60'), I'll sometimes bust out a bass rod with 10-15# mono leader on lighter braid.  Tag on a 3/4oz-1oz jighead and 6"-9" scampi swimbait.  It sinks slower, but as some folks said, it's way more sensitive to the smaller strikes, and makes an average rockfish feel like a beast.  After losing a few lings who chomped through the leader, or holed up and broke off, I stopped doing this until I have a fish or two on the stringer already.  :smt003

I also fish bass gear.  M-MH 7' sticks. work great on the rockfish. sometimes a bit overmatched on the lings, but that's part of the challenge of fishing.

There’s guys up here that use the Barbie little kid rods with 15 lb braid.... just be sure to cup your hand over the reel so it don’t get the cap yanked off.... DAMHIK!!!  :smt044

Edit:: I like using my trout rod.

Yep, they work!
after loosing a bunch of fish one year while chasing AOTY I got some of the lighter trevala rods. I only had one "heavy" bass rod because I mostly use finesse for bass.... and a rod rated for max 5/8oz might not cut it on the salt...

100’ and shallower I use my Fenwick and Calcutta 251 and 1oz swimbaits.  Really fun on schoolie rockfish.  Has landed a couple lingcod to 10#.  I also use heavier for jigs, smaller Avets.
