So few of y’all know my father in law is a veteran in good standing, he’s on social security, and gets a union pension for his over 2 decades of work as a garbage truck driver. He makes less then $40,000 a year. He only applied and received his VA benefits as of last year because the costal medical system was greatly failing him .... double amputee now.
He got a letter from the VA stating he makes too much money to receive VA help anymore and can go onto the market place and buy his own insurance like everyone else! WTF the market place for government mandated insurance bullshit stops enrolling in December for this year. No phone call no previous warning..... he has a fucking appointment at the Portland VA on the 12th of this damn month!!!!

I read that the VA budget just got its biggest ever by Donald Trump to over $200 Billion.... but there cutting off veterans that NEED there service after giving 15 fucking years of his life and his family’s as he traveled around the country base to base. Not to mention the time spent over seas during the Vietnam War not getting to see his daughters grow up to make sure our soldiers had reliable transportation.

I’m pissed, I’ll be talking to the Tillamook VA rep tomorrow even if I gotta sit in his office all day waiting.

That's brutal.  Sorry to hear.  It seems like Shulkin was leading the good fight in avoiding privatization, but he got tweet-fired: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Shulkin#cite_note-38
Now some other dude (or a series of dudes) is going to become rich at the expense of you and your hero father.  smh   :smt011

trump took from other programs to put into his pet programs.  So the VA's really got screwed because he also cut the total the VA is getting.  Once again proving our government does not care about us unless we are still in the womb or serving in the military.  Once you are out of both, they don't care!
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Don't know where you get your news but the current VA budget is actually the largest ever.

It can't hurt to contact your congressman or senator, as they can sometimes intervene in such cases.

contact the closet VA rep. office and talk to them. They should help you through the appeal process. Also at the same time contact your Congress man/women. They have a lot more pull that what people think and can get shit taken care of quickly. I have had issues with the VA in the past but my VA reps at my local office helped me out a lot. He is a vet and has the option to be treated by any VA facility. Fight this one! Hope it all works out for you guys!

First off thanks for the help, and a big thanks for those that also served, and keep this in mind.

So the exact amount for a single individual is $32.751 before there no longer eligible for VA benefits. The form THEY mail out says you can’t get VA medical service unless you have a qualifying condition. (Photo included) This is COMPLETELY misleading, TLW called and he can still see there doctors at the VA he’ll just have to pay more. Also since his MOS was as a helicopter mechanic, then a tank mechanic, his hearing loss he suffers IS considered service related since hearing protection wasn’t offered in the 70’s &80’s ...therefore putting him back in a position to receive benefits. So I picked him up and took him to the Tillamook office and he put in a claim for his hearing loss.

Contact the VA Patient Advocate in Portland and Ron Wyden's office.  Gather up any information about out-of-pocket medical expenses (prescription drug co-pays, travel miles, etc.) before you march in to talk to them.  Non-reimbursed medical costs are deducted from the gross income the VA uses to determine eligibility.

What usually happens in a situation like this is he'll be required to make co-payments for the care he receives, just like he would with private insurance.  They don't necessarily kick folks out of the system cold.

How did he get into the VA healthcare system to begin with when his income is too high to qualify?  That's weird.

Hey Mojo,  I have hearing aids that were provided by the VA.  I have to pay a $50 co-pay for the exam and another $50 for the fitting but it's still way less than what I would pay outside of the VA.  I'm a Vietnam Vet and served during the "Agent Orange" years.  Now that I'm old enough for Medicare, I only use the VA for hearing aids.  They replace them every 3 years because the technology changes so fast.  I was never denied service but have always paid a co-pay due to my income.  It was still a great benefit for the years between my retirement and Medicare eligibility and far less expensive than private insurance.  I'm pretty sure income doesn't determine if service will be provided but it is the basis for determining the amount of the co-pays for various services.   Don't give up.  The squeaky wheel definitely gets the grease when dealing with governmental agencies.

Does your father in law have a service connected disability too? If do then they cannot deny him anything no matter what he makes.
This is the first I have ever heard the VA taking benefits away from a veteran.
Everyone is correct here in seeing what a Veterans Service Organization can do to help and hopefully what the VA did was in error.

As I understand it, a veteran cannot be denied healthcare directly related to their service-related disability.  It doesn't carry over to all healthcare needs.

Like Mojo, I live on the coast of Oregon, and the coast is entirely rural outside of the half dozen or so "larger" cities (Coos Bay/North Bend form the largest population center on the coast).  The overarching problem is a pitiful lack of doctors, leaving many veterans learning that the only way to find a primary care doctor is through the VA system.  Otherwise a person can be fully insured and still need to run to an Emergency Room every time they get a cold.

Tinker, I am a 100% disabled veteran and I can go to any VA facility and get care no matter what. Even at 70% I could go into the VA emergency room and get care even if it didn't pertain to my service connected injuries.

What the VA in Oregon is doing is wrong. Like I stated before, go speak with a VSO in your area and try to get help with what your FIL is going through. The VA can not turn away a veteran for non-service injuries and saying he makes too much to get care.

One more thing, what priority category is your FIL?

My info was about his first budget.  Glad to see he is giving more, we can't help our vets enough.  We would be speaking a different language if it wasn't for our military.
