So, I call my sister in Monterey, where my Van and kayak is being stored. I tell my sisters that Theres a Derby at MBK that I plan on participating and that I need to come over and prepare my van and kayak. She said okay but the rear roof rack bar had fallen off😳 I said no problem I’ll just re-install it. Well I get there with my tools and realize that the cleats that holds it on the roof are missing....so, I’m on crunch time to find some replacement parts or I’m going to be like agarcia...and be on status as an EX-KAYAKER😟 Anybody have-any spare parts for Thule racks?

Damn it. My intent is to make this tournament and finally get my first win. Then...wedding invitation pops up.  :smt010 :smt010
Thought all my friends were married already. Damn it. I'll just have to wait for the next one to make a go at it.  Why does life get in the way of fishing? :smt009

This will be my 1st at this event.

Three's gonna be a number of different categories and prizes.  But yes, officially the heaviest fish caught wins a new Ocean Kayaks Prowler 13.

This is from MBK website:

2019 Fishing Derby Details & Rules:
Check in: 6:00am at our Monterey store
Launch time: 7:00am
Weigh-in time: 12:00 noon is the “cut-off”
BBQ Lunch @ 12:30 included

There will be other prizes for 2nd and 3rd place, Heaviest Rockfish, Heaviest Perch, Heaviest Ling Cod, Heaviest Halibut, and Most Random Catch. Winner of the grand prize will be the heaviest weighed sport-fish.

Rules:
*Must be registered to participate in prizes
*Anglers must be present and in line for weigh-in by noon to qualify.

*All fish entered must be caught from a kayak, without the aid of a powerboat.

*Must have a valid fishing license displayed while fishing.

*All DFG rules apply, including the multiple rod rule.  If you are fishing for halibut and have no rockfish aboard, you can fish with 2 rods.  One RCG fish on the boat=one rod only.

*Launch and landing from Monterey City beach by MBK only. Travel to other areas for launching and fishing not permitted.

*Leopard and thresher sharks included, but no other sharks or rays qualify.

*If two fish have exact equal weight, then the longer of the two wins.

Proceeds will benefit the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.

Sorry guys, I'm bailing out this time. This tuna phenomenon is too much to pass up. My boat buddy and I are going to try for BF again this weekend. It was a tough decision to make, but I can't pass up this opportunity. Have fun and good luck to eveyone

Sadly, it looks like I can't fish this tournament. My younger son runs track, and his 4x100 relay team will be competing at the CCS meet (trials) in Gilroy at 11:00. They should advance to the finals, but lots of bad things can happen in that race, so it could easily be their last race of the year.

I'm trying to convince the wifey that I need to be in Monterey before 7:00, as it would be great to see everybody pre-launch. And the launch itself is pretty awesome.

In any case, good luck to everybody!

Good, less competition! Hahaha

As I was tying leaders on Tuesday night, I bit down on the tag end of a knot to tighten it down...like I’ve done 100000 times before...and my tooth broke!! My first thought was “idiot! Why do I tie on hooks like that?” After going to work and talking to other people about it—3 other guys said they did the exact same thing! So I figure it worth warning my other fishing buddies...careful not to pull too hard on the tag end of the line when tying on a hook.
But I already got my tooth fixed and that leader is rigged up & ready to fish! (Maybe it will be good luck) See you guys in the morning :-)
