I dont think the shark we saw at the Cape would be deterred by a little shock in the water.  If anything it might piss it off.  I want to see another one, but preferably not when I'm alone way offshore.

Lots of research done on your part I take it.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
I believed he has some scientic proof better than SS independent study. 😂 Its not like SS just boasting their ego right?  :smt001
I understand excessive amounts of excrement will deter them also :smt044

Yes, the scientific research shows it helps, but the scientists did say it's not 100%.  Also I tend to spend more time on the salt then most if not all of you that have a shark shield, but have only had 1 confirmed great white close by.  I was excited and stoked to experience and watch the great white cruise by so close to me.  I'm not real eager to go fish the same spot alone, but it's not like I was in any rush to take off get off the water that day.

Also from what I have heard of the shark shield is that it could aid in landing a fish which I find wrong since the fish had less chance to escape since it get shocked and freezes because of the shark shield when reeling one in. Just my 2 cents.
Ummm so all your time on the water and last week you get to see one.
ONE SHARK NEXT TO MY BOAT IS TOO MANY.
I go into and on the water specifically to kill  fish I want to eat WIN WIN

The way I look at it, I'm out there in a $3000 kayak and I don't want some curious shark taking a nibble out of my hull just to satisfy it that it's not edible. Not to mention the possibility of getting PTSD from the encounter and not wanting to return to the ocean again in sport that I love. Maybe it only works 90% of the time but I'll bet just sitting there holding your whatever works 0%! It seems we have had more than the usual GWS encounters this year and maybe the climate change or ocean currents are causing a shift in the usual habitat. I know this is usually a time when we tend to see more sharks around, hence "Sharktober", so I just want to better my odds that I won't have to swim for it while my kayak sinks...

The way I look at it is I have never been worried diving or fishing any where I have gone out. But even if there is only a one percent chance of injury/ death what is the price of that. What is it worth if you take a loved one on the water and they get hit and (JUST) loose a limb? What would it have been worth to your family if you lost a limb and can't work or worse.
The basis of this site has always been to promote these sports safely.

I may or may not have been on the salt as much as others here, But, I have had Three encounters with the Landlord in just over a year.
With this many encounters so close to my home, it comes down to simple math ..... I live as close to the salt as one could be ..... I fish the salt more each year (35+ days in 2016, 40+ days in 2017, 45+ days so far in 2018) ..... Sharks are a protected Species and can only grow in numbers.
Now, after spending thousands on kayak, paddle, FF/GPS,  Fri Suites, PFD, Rod&Reel combos etc.
$500 was a small price to pay for piece of mind ....
When I remember to turn it on of course

It does not aid in landing fish, they are not affected by it.

From Sharkshield.com:
"Sharks have short-range electrical receptors in their snouts used for finding food, Ocean Guardian’s government approved, and patented technology creates a powerful three-dimensional electrical field which causes safe but unbearable spasms in these sensitive receptors turning sharks away, including Great Whites.

Shark Shield technology can only repel sharks and sting-rays. It does not affect or repel fish, crocodiles, dolphins, whales, or freshwater creatures."

Actually, I believe it shocks anything that it comes into close contact with. Trust me on this I been zapped way too many times and its not nice when you're 30 feet under water and that tail whips around and shocks you.

I've seen fish get zapped and spasm when they get close enough or touch it.

It repels sharks and sting rays at a greater distance because of their sensitive receptors. That's what makes this effective against them. It's like you have a force field around you repelling them.

I can only imagine that what they sense is very irritating and uncomfortable for them. They basically get zapped across their face.

I am wondering what level of zap the SS gives off in close contact with it. I imagine it has to actually make contact with you or the fish to feel it. It's probably a very high voltage, very low amperage type of zap, like a static electricity or a spark plug wire. I had a job in AZ laying carpet, very low humidity, and when you unrolled a 100 feet of carpet you could see the sparks fly! I swear you could weld with the zap, we always shorted ourselves out with our carpet knife on something metal. How long does it take a fish to recover from the zap? Sure they spasm, so do you if you grab a spark plug wire! But the effect is a spontaneous reflex action, not a permanent condition.

I once grabbed the cord to get it out of the water while it was still on and it made my right leg involuntarily kick up into the air. So just remember to turn it off when you grab it. It was more of a holy shit wtf it didn’t hurt really it was more of a surprise.

Mines here! Thanks again for the group buy and discount! Here's a photo of how it works on a 2019 Outback. There are scupper holes amidship on the 2019 and there is a scupper plug at the end of the electrode assembly. Unit fits under the seat pretty well if you raise it halfway.
