Rockfish Opener June 1st, 2nd or 3rd Sonoma Coast

Depending on the weather and interest from others, I'm hoping to get out into the salt water again to catch some lingcod and rockfish one day this coming weekend.  I'd even be willing to take Friday the 1st off if necessary.  My normal fishing partners are out of town that weekend so I'm looking to drum up at least one other person to go with.  As for where, anywhere between Fort Ross and say Salt Point would work for me.

I will be up at Pt. Arena the 1st. If it looks too gnarley I will head down and give Ocean Cove a shot.

Yeah, too bad rockfish couldn't open tomorrow or Wednesday when this winds will be down below 10 mph for a change.  I'm going to hope for the best at this point, but I'm prepared to stay home and wait out the weather.

Arrgh ... I was thinking of joining you Brian, until I saw the forecast as well.  My fingers are crossed too.  Let's sync up later in the week.

Mother nature did the same thing right before the salmon opener too. Nice calm seas a couple days before and then high seas for a month following... I work for the opener, but if the ocean cooperates, I may be able to do the third day. No commitments right now. I usually wait til the day before to make sure the weather's on our side. I'll keep an eye on it.

My guess is that if this is true, they were "collecting samples".  Many of the scientists and the "Animal resource group" here at the lab, depending on what they study (or for educational reasons) have scientific collecting permits from DFG.  These collecting permits are usually for specific persons, specific species and specific reasons.  The interesting thing about them is that recreational regulations don't apply, although DFG may impose restrictions to the permit like min size, max catch, etc...   For example, Jim "InSeine" Hobbs has a permit to collect juvenile rockfish year round with a large beach seine.  That's something you couldn't legally do with a simple fishing licsence.

Yes Stuart, I was making an assumption, that's why I prefaced that sentence with "My guess is...".

BTW, why do you always assume the worst?  It is quite possible that this was someone poaching.  The poachers could have even been from the lab.  Another alternative, is that they were poachers not affiliated with the lab who were using the name of the lab as part of an elaborate excuse.  The most reasonable and legal explanation is the scientific collecting.

Anyway, you are at least right about what they should have said, and explaining about scientific collecting is exactly what I've said to members of the public in the past when collecting samples (usually it's just small inverts like barnacles and tunicates and not fish).

I believe that the marine lab boats have some sort of UC or BML designation on them, but I don't believe that it is a requirement by DFG that scientific collecting permits have to be used on an official boat.   However, one of the requirements of the permit (and this is in my reply to Fuzz's similar post), is that the collectors are required to notify DFG 24 hrs in advance of any sampling.. what they will be collecting and where.  This should help prevent rangers from wasting their time with erroneous CalTip Calls.

Man, the wind forecasts keep changing often enough to be annoying.  One thing that isn't changing is that there is going to be a mixed swell with some from the NW and some from the SW.  That'll make for a washing machine out there.

I'm planning to try Ft Ross early Friday, June 1st. I will decide late Thursday eve if going. I may even make the drive to Jenner from Santa Rosa to check ocean conditions. Company always welcome, I'll be in black 4 runner with white boat.

Nope, I'm afriad you'll be out of cell range once you get past Guerneville.

OK, I too will be at Ocean cove on friday and Sat.and will try to give the rockfishing and diving A go. we will have A grey suburban 4x4 and A Scion box,but the rides are T140's in blue and tan.
