I think I have a good idea of what happened, but a diagram of where all the vessels were would be helpful if you want suggestions on how to avoid it in future. It seems like you pinned yourself in too close to the rocks and weren't willing to re-position the kayak to avoid the wake at the last second.

I was in Deep Reef with Nate trolling at salmon speed and the Riptide came in full throttle right at our starboard quarter. I wasn't sure which direction he was heading to until he turned 25 yards away from us. D*ck move for sure but you have to anticipate and position your boat for the least amount of impact from the waves instead of having to deal with the worst case scenario.

I still haven’t heard if they were on their way in or out. On the way out the power boats are moving slow and you have enough time to see them coming. Did they expect the charter boat to wait it’s turn while they paddled out? Or were they coming in and the charter boat was moving fast and caught up to them faster than they expected? Either way it’s like using a cross walk on a busy street. You should wait for a safe moment before getting into a traffic lane regardless of who has the right of way.
They are on the way out, Hulicat came from behind with unexpected speed. Caught them off guard.

If that is true, you aren’t supposed to overtake in the channel like that. Seems like OP has a legit gripe to me.  I know I’m the only one, whatever, you guys suck for jumping on OP’s nuts.

Thanks. So the lesson to be learned is that we should look for power boats before entering the jaws and realize they will be passing us as they power up creating their largest wake at a time where we are unable to easily get to a safe distance? Therefore the wise move is to wait out of the way for them to pass unless we're sure we have enough time to clear the jaws before the power boat catches up?

I dunno.  I think the OP has a semi-legitimate gripe.  Although he should have been on the right side of the channel.   And, when in a channel ...

I'm hosting self-rescue classes next weekend in the mouth of HMB.

When a bird is born the mother tosses it off the tree and it's fly or die.

Surely you all are tougher than a baby bird.

Yeah, law of gross tonnage.  Just like the cheapest car has the right of way.  I don't know how many of us here would be able to stay upright 100% of the time with the wake of an overtaking boat in a narrow channel with wake refracting of the jetties.  It takes some skill beyond what is typically expected of a new SOT captain and is an unusual situation.

I thought his complaint about how he was treated here was well taken.  Has anyone contacted the owner of the vessel yet and let them know about this thread?  Seems like something that could get cleared up hearing from the other side.  And yeah the "stay away from" title is a little snowflakey in it's seeming attempt to affect livelihood over a slight, but we've been down Annie's Organics road before and Alex isn't here to defend himself.

I've fished with Omar several times, and he knows how to handle a kayak in rough water. From a text he sent me it sounds like the wake hit him from behind at two second intervals, so maybe he didn't have time to reposition. Anyway, it's a good reminder to be extra alert in high traffic areas, and as kayakers we may not always be aware of all the considerations that go into navigating a large power boat in a tight area.

Yes. You have the right of way in a crosswalk. That doesn't mean its a good idea to cross without looking first. Its even a good idea to wait on the sidewalk a little if it avoids causing traffic to stop for you. Having the right of way sometimes only matters to decide who will have to pay the damages or the funeral expenses.
