Kayakers are getting as bad as cyclists on roadways....
Bigger vessel has the right of way! It is up to you in the smaller, more maneuverable vessel to WAIT until it is safe to proceed.
Maybe we need a law giving kayaks 3' safe space too? (HEAVY SARCASM)
Dont be a douche, wait until it is safe to pass through, then paddle with purpose to cross. Boats do not have brakes.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Boats may not have brakes but they do have reverse to slow and halt forward momentum. Bikes? overall a good thing despite a few abusers of rationality on the roads. First paved roads in the nation were done by bicyclists to mitigate the harsh ride using solid rubber tires. Cars, motorcycles, and even airplanes (think Wright Bros) all owe a debt to the bicycle and bicycle mechanic.

Bicyclists are a danger to themselves and others IMO. I know it's a big debate around here, and I really don't want to see anyone hurt.
The roads out here are barely fit for vehicle cross traffic, let alone additional bike traffic. I am super respectful and safe, but still have a near accident every other day in west county.
To me it doesn't seem okay. If it's a split second decision between me head on with another vehicle, or running a bicyclist off the road, I have to do what is least dangerous for me and mine.
I can respect the passion for the sport, but stick to roads that are safer. It's not safe on many many roadways out here.
The same way that kayakers are a danger to others in congested waterways, the bikes are a major hazard to motorists in rural areas.
If you want to thank a Vet, be a person worth fighting for.

I don't trust anyone wearing spandex on a bike.  " a few abusers of rationality?" In Santa Cruz it's more like "devoid of rationality."  Anecdotally, I'd say 90% of bikers here (esp spando's, and most especially if there are two or more together) always run stop signs, 50% will run red lights after stopping, and 15% are actively provocative on the road.  Almost as bad are the fixie guys ("I don't need brakes") We lost two 20-somethings the past few years on fixies crushed by big rigs turning right.  The fixies were threading the needle by the curb.  Squashed.

On the other hand I lost a good buddy and former workmate just last week. Ben Doniach.  Murray street just past the harbor bridge.  By all accounts he was a dedicated and safe daily cyclist. He recovered from a brain tumor about 15 years ago, so outside chance he may have had a seizure that put him into the traffic lane. Another very good friend, UCPD Sergeant and surf buddy Robert Jones got creamed from behind just south of Davenport on Hwy 1.  He wasn't killed, but was severely disabled physically and mentally, lasted another 3 years then died.  I KNOW that guy was adhering to the rules of the road.

Point is, bicyclists should adhere to the unwritten law of gross tonnage as should kayakers.  Would you rather be "right," or "alive?"

Obviously if your smaller moving mass on bike or kayak is threatened by the larger moving mass of a car or boat you make the life saving choice but that doesn't negate the principle of bikes and kayaks having rights. If mere size and strength was all that counted, society as we know it could not exist. Laws make civilization possible. I've ridden a lot on the narrow country roads in west Sonoma County and if one picks time and place, ie. not Sunday afternoon on Hwy One, biking is relatively safe. Yes. There have been fatal accidents and injuries between bike and car but given the thousands of miles of bike riding per week, in a statistical sense, it is not excessively dangerous.

Do you run stop signs?

Nope.

Awesome.  (Now you're going to think about it at every stop sign)

Do you come to a complete dead stop at every stop sign you encounter when driving? Curious. Food for thought.
Cheers.

Just for fun...that is called a "California Stop", stop signs with white trim are optional...be well...and I'll give you lots of room...it's kind of a team effort to avoid eachother... :smt006

For the most part yes.

On the flip side, a newcomer to ca was at a stop sign at the costco gas. He made sure that I had stopped (he was stopped first for a FULL 3 seconds) before proceeding -- slowly as he looked at me to make sure that I didn't t-bone him as he cruised by.

Makes me want to do CA stops for shits and giggles.

But, going back to the original topic and no way piling on -- think of it as the ocean is dangerous and you have to take care of you.

I launched at grand street in alameda in my 15' Arima, which is 1.5' less than my AI. It's dark and I see lights near the mouth to the actual bay. Before I know it, I realized that it's one of those tug boats and they don't have much of a wake from my experience when they're cruising. Well, this one wasn't cruising and I point my bow directly to the wake at the last moment in the dark. The waves go over my bow and canopy, but at least I'm safe. Some harsh comments on this thread, but you're out in the big blue and if another boater is your biggest concern, that -- relatively -- is a good day.

Yes, in fact I do.  Look both ways twice, too.  Even give 5 feet around cyclists when passing.  Even if they are an asshole they don't deserve to get hurt.  At least not by me.

Pretty much have to with all the bicyclists running stop signs around here.  Half serious ...
