Very good looking motor mount.

I am interested in the scotty mounts that attach to the AI AKA crossbar. Did you buy those or make those? I have a 2010 AI and am interested in doing a similar project.

There are a lot of custom parts in this post. If you're referring to the part that allows the Scotty 241 to be mounted on the crossbar, I made that base myself. However, PatR used to, and probably still offers a similar base in a different material that you can purchase. Contact him.

Very impressive. Could you tell what sized aluminum bars you used for the final version? How do you join the two pieces of aluminum together? And where is a good place to buy stainless hex bolts? I need to build a mount for my 2016 AI, and I am learning a lot from here.

The aluminum bar is 1.5"x4"x34" long. The extension piece is 10" long. They are joined by three 0.75 inch 1/4-20 stainless steel bolts, one with a nut
and the other two just threaded down. I bought the nuts and bolts from Amazon. The bar can be purchased from Alan Steel & Supply in Redwood City.

Have I met you at OP a couple weeks ago?

By the way, for the 2016 AI, you may or may not need the extend piece on top. It was added only for height adjustment because the motor didn't like sitting too low in the water. Your AI rides higher on the water and may not need the extension, or may need a shorter extension. You'll have to test it out with you motor on the water and adjust accordingly.

Yes Ernest, it was me who was next to you at OP a couple of weeks ago, and it was very nice meeting and chatting with you!

Thanks a lot for the great info! I will go to Alan Steel & Supply for the aluminum pieces tomorrow, and I think this will be the last needed parts to start trying putting up my version :smt001.

I do not want to put the PatR on the top of the crossbar since I want to flip the yak and roof top it (PatR will touch the car roof if I mount it on the top), so I am going to mount two PatR on the side of the crossbar. I will then try to make a ABS piece that goes into rod holders to be the third point to enforce the mount. I have no idea if this ABS piece will be strong enough to keep the mount steady, and I can just hope for the best.

I don't know if my 2016 AI is higher or lower than yours on the water, assuming they are the same height on the water, and my side mounted Scotty mounts raise the aluminum about 2", I think I will just get 1.5"x3" bar with another 1.5"x3" extension on top of it to mount the motor. If I need to change the height, I will just go buy 1.5"x2" or 1.5"x4" piece to swap out the 1.5"x3" piece.

Let the fun starts :smt001

This is what I have so far, and I will put a turnbuckle between the top portion of the mount and the pad eye that the bungee goes through, in hope it will offer a good third point to hold the mount steady when pushed by the motor.

Looks great. Looks like it should work when you add your turn-buckles.

Finally put on the turnbuckles, and the unit feels pretty solid when I push forward mimicking the motor push. Next step is to put on the motor and try it out, and the only minor missing details is that I do not have a motor, and the new shipment of Suzuki 2.5hp outboard is stuck somewhere on the pacific ocean thanks to Covid-19 :smt010

Looks good Tong. I’m sure it will handle the motor with no issue.

Nice job, I like how the turnbuckles are connected to the bungee mounts.

Looks good!  A couple of questions, did you end up using PatR's mount and is the turnbuckle stainless steel (304 or 316) or aluminum (6061?)?

Both Scotty mounts were on PatRs, and turnbuckles are 316 marine grade stainless steel.

Tong, I looked at your mount again and remember something. When the engine is running, the motor tends to twist and pull the bar towards the back. If your turnbuckles are anchored to the front of the bar, they would help alleviate the engine's pulling force. Anchoring the buckles toward the back does not help as much. It's more pronounced the faster you travel. You may consider finding a way to anchor the turnbuckles towards the front of the kayak.
