If the downrigger goes into the cup holder i won’t be able to use both AKA, i know it’s a pain in the ass, but it seems what most adventure island guys have been doing. If not the downrigger is getting mounted on the aka arms.

I have it set up the same way pretty much. Not bad at all, just make sure there is enough clearance between the backrest and the DR. Made a mistake the first time around of having it too close. Not fun when you're releasing 12 lb lead weight down 100 feet.

You use 12 lb lead on your DR?

If you fish deep with heavy downrigger ball. This will save your back and arm. I use 12lb ball for Monterey bay.

Here is an update on the latest of my motor mount. Since Ernst said the motor will vibrate the mount back and forth in both directions, I became worried to only have turnbuckles in the back of the mount, and I did not want to install extra turnbuckles in the front of the mount since I will need to drill holes on the AI to do it (I try not to drill any holes on the yak), so I decided to use another PatR mounted on the top of the crossbar, which triagulates the mount force and makes it stable. I also got lucky snatching up a Suzuki 2.5HP from a local store, so far everything looks good, but I still need to give it a real water test before concluding. A huge thanks to Ernst for the custom printed inserts and a ton of advice!

Tong

Can't wait to see your on-the-water test of the mount with the motor. The Scotty's seem kinda closely bunched towards the middle of the crossbar. Hope it doesn't vibrate back and forth when you go fast. Let us know.

I don't know if there will be any vibration, but I see that the Scotty's are kinda bunched up in the middle. When you put a 30lb motor a foot and a half away from the mounting points, and then apply power, the bar has room to flex. That's all I'm saying. But I don't know that. That's why I'm asking Tong to report back after he test drives the setup. If it were me, I would mount two on top towards the far left and far right of the crossbar, and put one on the side in the middle instead.

Well, I was only going to use the two side mounted scotty together with the turnbuckle to start with, and the AKA release buttons prevented me from placing the two scotty mounts any further than they are right now. I really did not want to mount any scotty on the top of the crossbar to start with because I wanted to be able to flip the yak uptown side when I car top it, until I found it is so difficult to flip the AI upside down and keep it steady when trying to push it onto my SUV. If I was to do it again, I would top mount two scotty on the crossbar as far as I can, then side mount the third scotty at the middle of the crossbar as Ernst said. But so far it felt pretty stable, and I will report back after water testing it.

I am getting a Suzuki 2.5 on Sunday! @Tong FYI I got it from a SD dealer "Inmar Marine Group".

One idea I want to try is to replace the scotty mount with a solid 2x2x4 block to mount the bar to patr. I only need 1 scotty base when not using the engine. I will start with 2x4 wood for prototyping.

Quick question @Lucky13: what is the diameter of the knobs? Looks like they have 1/4, 3/8 and 5/16 in stock.

Hi Rui,

I’m in the market for a Suzuki 2.5. Did you have a positive experience ordering from this place?

Thanks,
Jon

I did an AI motor mount using similar concept below on what I did for my Outback (see NCKA link below).  But instead of the H-Rail add-on, I used YakAttack geartrack and the backing plate.  In addition, the motor mount is not removable (i.e. I dont use the YakAttack Geartrac hardware assortment kit) .  It is very solid.  Pics to follow.

Yak^3, it looks like that dude on the Hobie forum used 1/4" thick aluminum and doubled up square tubes (as opposed to your 1/8" rectangular tubing). Seems like his setup has got to weigh a ton. I assume that you have had no trouble with your setup, but do you think there is any chance that the heavier setup might be needed under any imaginable circumstances?
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I find it the .125" is enough for me.  I dont go full speed too much, so I feel OK about it personally.  But it's an easy fix if you want, just go to 1/4" rectangular tube if you want.  I went with rectangular tubing because I dont want to go through the trouble of stacking things.  I did find it earlier that a .125 is enough to break a torqeedo (strong) plastic propeller.  Note of caution here, a gas motor propeller is made from metal, so definitely needs to be careful.  You are welcome to check out the setup yourself.  Just let me know when you are going to go out and I will bring it out the AI + DF2.5 with me.
