Tong, I looked at your mount again and remember something. When the engine is running, the motor tends to twist and pull the bar towards the back. If your turnbuckles are anchored to the front of the bar, they would help alleviate the engine's pulling force. Anchoring the buckles toward the back does not help as much. It's more pronounced the faster you travel. You may consider finding a way to anchor the turnbuckles towards the front of the kayak.

Thanks a lot for the extra info Ernest! To anchor it to the front of the kayak, I would have to drill on the yak, which I was trying to avoid so far. I will probably put a couple of track mounts to the front of the mount to anchor the turnbuckles.

Tong,
When we met last week you mentioned the Scotty insert you use is not flush with the rod holder mount. I 3D-printed one that is flush. It should make the motor bar much more stable since the bar could now anchor flat on the scotty mounts. PM me if you need some.

Sorry, due to Covid19, the store has not received their shipment of the 2.5HP Suzuki outboards (they have been telling me two weeks of extra waiting for more than two months), so I am still waiting to buy the outboard.

they told me the samething and went ahead and bought a honda 2.2 instead since they have it in stock. Just gotta find sometime to build the motor mount now. I’ve got some idea I want to try, i’ll post some pictures when i’m done with my build. This thread has been very helpful for me especially with lucky13’s pictures.

I am getting a Suzuki 2.5 on Sunday! @Tong FYI I got it from a SD dealer "Inmar Marine Group".

One idea I want to try is to replace the scotty mount with a solid 2x2x4 block to mount the bar to patr. I only need 1 scotty base when not using the engine. I will start with 2x4 wood for prototyping.

Quick question @Lucky13: what is the diameter of the knobs? Looks like they have 1/4, 3/8 and 5/16 in stock.

I use 5/16. For a quicker answer, just PM me.

Btw, I planned to work on your seat latches this weekend. I already cut the plates and the hooks, just need to weld them.

Nice. Looks like it would hold the motor. Seems you have tracks on the bottom. I can't tell whether the tube is attached to the patr mounts. One of the guys also mounted a DR on the bar, but he said it was a pain to turn around to crank. I'm sure you can get use to it.

it’s connected to the pat r mounts and also connected via gear track. I haven’t taken out the kayak yet so i’m not sure how much of a pain it’s going to be to pick up line with my downrigger. This motor mount is more like a permanent install. I’m trying to figure out where to put my folbe/scotty rod holders now.

I don't have a motor mount, so I can't comment on that, but the DR in that position would seem to be a major PITA (or at least a pain in the back). I'd suggest mounting the DR forward in the cupholder.

If the downrigger goes into the cup holder i won’t be able to use both AKA, i know it’s a pain in the ass, but it seems what most adventure island guys have been doing. If not the downrigger is getting mounted on the aka arms.
