It is too late to sign up but you are more than welcome to come and fish and hang out.  DOn't let the non competing part stop you from enjoying an epic weekend in the cove.

I would like to propose that we get together on Sunday or Monday and clear out the Sea Urchins around the area near the Tide Inn to help the Abalone population in Shelter Cove.  Each diver/snorkeler can pick 35 of them and we can have an Uni fest afterward  :smt003  What do you guys/gals think?

Let's do a dive if conditions allow.  I'm skeptical of wholesale clearing of urchins.  I agree they're having a bad effect, but I hate to wipe them out of an area - they actually stop drifting kelp, so abalone around them can grab that food too.  I'll be looking to clear concentrated urchins from around abalone, but not all of them.

We will all learn more as time goes by regarding the best way to try to 'fix' nature, IMO.

Getting calm water with clarity of more than about 2 to 3 feet will be the key - it's iffy.

Please educate me about "they actually stop drifting kelp". I thought they destroy the holdfast thus cause the kelp to uproot and drift away.

If there are too many urchins they eat all the kelp - from top to bottom of the plant.  When there are less urchins they serve a function as something that can stop drifting kelp - then neighboring animals like abalone can lift up and grab some to eat.

New look along the northern campground border.  Check out how the wind will be blocked by that fence!

Oh, and what's that on the other side of the fence?  A brewery?!!  :smt003
