Hey Guys,
I'm sick of reading the huge list of regs, so I just want to ask...where is rockfish currently open and when does it open further north (i'm in SF)?
And are the size and bag limits the same as last year?
 2 lings at 24" ?
 1 cab @ 15" ?
 1 greenling @12" ?
10 rockfish including cabs and greenling?

Thanks!
 Andrew
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I have the same question, and find the regs confusing.  Thanks!

I hate how they write the regs as well but I think that instead of asking for the help of someone who may or may not understand the regs themselves. I would call fish and game.

That said the zone including bodega bay opens june 1 with a max depth of 180'

This website is a pretty good way to figure out what is open, closed, or partially closed depending on where you are fishing.  It's simpler than wading through the reg booklet.  Hope it's helpful.

You pretty much got it execpt it's 2 greenlings within your bag limit, and you can get one bocaccio min size 15 inches I think.  Pigeon Point south to Lopez Point is open.

No cow cod, canaries, or yellloweye rockfish allowed. Canaries are the ones to watch for,  An orange-red rockfish with distinctive grey strip running laterally down the side of the fish.

Enjoy!

While we're on the topic (not that this hasn't been brought up before), looking at the DFG site, it appears that Ling Cod are not sublimited in the 10-fish RCG bag limit.   So, as I understand it, on a given day you could take 2 greenling, 1 cab, 5 blacks, 2 vermillion, 3 halibut, and 2 lings, all of legal size.   Well I mean, theoretically...

I thought it was that way, anyway.  Correct me if I'm wrong?

And yea, I'd eat all that (and more)...

Craig, I'd prefer to think of it as we can keep: 2 greenling>12 inches, 1 cabezon>15 inches, 7 vermillions, 2 lingcod>24 inches, 3 halibut>22 inches, and 2 salmon>20 inches. Now THAT would be an epic day of fishing!

I think the regs are not that hard to understand. At least, not as hard as everyone says. In fact, the DFG website has undergone some major upgrades recently, making it much more user friendly.
Here is a very simple, easy to use web page that details all of the groundfish regs (same as seen in your regulations booklet): http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/bfregs2007.html

Now, if you wanna talk about difficult-to-comprehend regulations...try to decipher the salmonid regs, especially steelhead and salmon within anadramous watersheds! HA!

Good luck,
PK

Cool.. Thanks for the clarification!

I don't know if you could fit any salmonids in the yak after all that!

Me, I prefer to steer clear of more dangerous anadramous watersheds, let the steelhead and salmonoids duke it out amongst themselves and not get inbetween them.  I don't need that drama.

See you out on the big water though!

Sin Coast,
That is a good days fishing, but you are still 3 "finfish" short of a day's limit.  You can always add a Pacific Halibut, Stripers, White Seabass, or surfperch to your bag.

So Windrider, is it 20 "finfish" per person max, comprised of any legal limits, sublimits or sub-sublimits?

Just curious!  I would love to need to know.   :smt001

Yes, 20 finfish total with no more than 10 of any one species, and of course all the individual sublimits such as 1 Cab, 2 Lings, 2 Salmon, etc..  That's a lot of fish and probably more than a person needs in a day, but then how many people catch 20 finfish in a day?

:smt003  Abking:  Jedi-hothead in training!  I'm sorry that I like bragging so much - it's really a reprehensible trait...  I just want people to fish with!!!!!!!!   :smt001  Sorry for being a jackass!

Oh, yeah, and on-topic, I agree with PK, the regs aren't too bad.  Too many people say they are way too vague, and I do agree that it's true for some areas at some times of year, but the rockfish regs are pretty clear and accessible right now.  June opener between north of Shelter Cove and Pigeon Pt., right?

No prob Abking!  Just start tossing those finfish after the 20th one onto my game clip, and I'll fish with a jedi-hothead braggart any day!

How about adding some mollusk in that bounty of seafood. I know at the Elk some of the fisherman came back with urchins and abs with their stringers of rockcod.
yep! I was jealous then too... :smt003

I was feeling like a real idiot for a while after typing that - thanks for making me feel better, Craig!   :smt001

To continue a cool threadjack theme here...  The ultimate combo day is a big draw at this point.  A big ling and king day or massive ab and cab, add crab...  halibut and ling/rockfish...  Should be a good summer.   :smt001
