So I've heard there are multiple types, brands of motion sickness. Dramamine made me quite drowsy and sluggish throughout the day. Any recommendations on any alternatives?

I take a regular Dramamine about 12 hrs prior, then a chewable Dramamine about 2 hours prior. Works for me. Before I was taking regular Dramamine the morning of and I would get super sleepy.

The best is prescription scopolamine though. No idea why it's a prescription drug, but it works awesome. I get the patch from my doctor for the big ocean days.

This!  It works better than anything I tried before I got used to being out on the ocean.

There's a "less drowsy" version of Dramamine, and Meclazine is rumored to make you feel less drowsy, too.  Some folks I know swear by ginger candies as a "booster" when they're out fishing.

Check some of the forums for folks who take cruise ship vacations for medicines and tricks that work or don't work for them.  They're pretty informative.

(Scopolamine is still a prescription drug because of the increased risk for folks with heart or kidney problems)

I'm not a doctor , I was a Navy Corpsman and E.M.T.  and as with all meds otc or not  , check with a health care professional..but here is my experience.....

Dimenhydrinate or Dramamine ( brand name ) is the most common otc for motion sickness, it also has the side effects most people complain about

Dramamine ll Less Drowsy (brand name ) which is  Meclizine and not    Dimenhydrinate for some has less side effects

Scopolamine is ment to depress the central nervous system and is stronger in that regard compared to the other two

The best ℞ for combating sea sickness: good night sleep ,no or low alcohol the night before, being well hydrated, with water !

Some will take a dose 12-24 hours before going out to get the chems into the system and then dose up as recommended by directions on the package ,say they have good results .

If it looks to be a big water day ,I take Meclizine before bed , half a tab when I awake with a light meal and the other half if I think I'm going to need it when I arrive at the launch.

I once ate 2 JITB Breakfast Jacks pre  trip bad idea  lol

Drink more water and a couple Motrin is what you usually prescribe.

All very great advice. I will put it all in consideration and see what works best. I plan on winging off one day from any type of motion sickness. This is just meanwhile I get use to the water. Thanks guys really appreciate all the advice.

Go to the prescription counter at Wally World and ask for Meclazine.
It's either 50 or 100 tablets for around $5. Either way it's a bargain.
I get motion sickness in a real bad way but this stuff works for me.
Unless of course it's like this OTW, then only a Scope patch will work.
See what the horizon doing? That's the same thing your bunk is doing.

I like the patch, especially for extended trips. The only side effect that I have experienced is dry mouth, but I'll take that any day over getting sick. I believe the standard dose covers you for three days, but they may offer a lower dose. For single days, I just cut one in half. Put it on the night before so it has a chance to get into your system. Worth every penny.

I've never chummed, and the OTC meds weird me out, but I can get queasy if there are short cross swells, so I try to avoid those days or have a bit of ginger candy.
But I start the day before with a good-sized lunch of mild, non-spicy food , with a light mild dinner, and on launch day have breakfast of tea and a protein drink or egg nog (egg whites, OJ, soy milk, flax seed meal, nutmeg and ginger).
It also helps to have had a bowel movement in the morning. Also, I've noticed I have fewer issues if I've taken an antihistamine (Allegra or Claritin) if my allergies are acting up anyway. (I've read that some motion sickness meds are strong anti-histamines, so I wouldn't take both at the same time.)
But some people are just very sensitive to motion, so I consider myself lucky not to be one of them.
