The old threads here are informative, but is there anything new on the home security front?  I never followed through on getting a new security system, but my neighborhood has seen a new rash of thefts.  I'm looking for a security system that does the following:

* Wireless cameras, battery operated, reasonably long life or solar powered.
* wifi connected through my home router
* On site recording to secure DVR or hard drive
* night vision
* motion detection
* 3mp or better cameras
* 4 cameras, with ability to expand number of cameras
* push notification to iPhone for activity at unusual hour on street camera, all hours in the alley
* under $1,000

Does such an animal exist?  I'll hardwire if I have to but its 2017 and all of this seems like it should be possible.

I don't need to know how to deal with the tweekers, only to catch them on camera and be alerted in real time.  Property crimes are out of control in my neighborhood right now.

Based on recommendation from a colleague who owns a small retail establishment, I'm looking at the Arlo systems by Netgear. Sounds like they might be a good fit for your requirements.

No local recording?  Or am I reading it wrong.  It looks good otherwise.  The amazon reviews are all over the place and fairly evenly distributed.  That's pretty uncommon.  It looks like a major complaint is the speed with which the motion detector works, failing to start in time to catch the action.  There is probably a sensitivity setting to fix that.

I'd really like to record to a hard drive locally.  I don't trust that companies will stay in business and honor ongoing service commitments, so no local recording is probably a deal breaker for me.

I'm not understanding the whole "camera and personal alert" security model.  What good is it to record the tweeker and get an e-mail or text when you are away from home?  Those guys are in and out in minutes.  By the time you called a cop, who probably isn't going to do anything but take a report anyways and MAYBE come out if you insist, the tweeker is long gone.  Seems to me the better model for home security is to prevent the break-in in the first place and if they do attempt to get in, then something to scare them away like a loud siren or a dog.

Can anyone testify that a security camera system actually preserved their private property from being stolen, other than maybe waving off the thief who spotted the camera and moved on to another house perhaps?

I'm more concerned about getting an alert while I am home.

Lojacking the camera seems like a pretty good idea now that you mention it.

From what I've read, the wireless ones are just not quite there yet.  The Arlos are popular but seem expensive for what they are.  Their motion detection has been ripped quite a few places that I've read.

The other one is the ring cams, but people have complained about those as well.  Most of these record to the cloud rather than to a local hard drive.  Also remember that wireless may not be much use depending on how far away from your router you are, unless you have some range extenders or a mesh type system.

I'm planning to go with a hardwired system for now until the wireless ones get better.  I'd love to put up a couple wireless cameras way out in my front yard so i can scope my boat or my truck parked on the street at night but the tech just doesn't seem to there.

I've been using Yi cameras inside of the house and they seem to do a good job, and are probably too aggressive with their motion detection (the amount of moths i catch on infrared is kinda ridiculous).  They are planning to have outdoor cams as well which I'll probably be trying out soon due to their affordability.  But I would have to figure out the power part.

i have been using this for the past year.

https://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-Full-HD-1080P-Security-System/dp/B00R3QLHYM/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1491946348&sr=1-11&keywords=amcrest

Very reliable and it seem they have dropped in price. Its hardwired so you have to run the lines. It wasn't too bad running the lines. I also picked up these wifi unit from them.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FEEKB7I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I view it on my phone to check the status at home or spy on my dog. lol I think I have enough camera for now lol I'm going to eventually get the simply safe system for the audible and siren. I believe you can add a siren to the amcrest as well. Anyways another option :)

I wouldn't rely on cameras anymore. These crooks wear a sweatshirt and pull the hood over their head and wear sunglasses so you cant really see their face.  Cameras help but the pros know how work around them.
