Took my yak out for the first time today out of HMB. Boy that is quite a paddle just out of the jetty!
Anyhow, tossed out a ring and a trap. Paddled back right inside the jetty and just hung out in the calm for 15 min and paddled back. Did this twice and came up with 2 fat Dungy's and 6 huge rock crab.
On my final paddle out the foot peg snapped off of my left side as I was paddling which caused me to straighten my leg and lean to the left and of course, I took a dunk. Luckily I had my wetsuit on and my buddy was there. I was able to immediately prop back up on my yak first attempt. I dont see how some folks go out in waders! So grateful for the wetsuit. In fact, I was warmer after I got wet than when I was dry. It was like was zipped up in warm water after a while.
Anyhow, not bad fo my first time out. I didn't venture past 2-300 yards out of the mouth. I probably could've but, baby steps.

Congratulations on getting out there and catching dinner. Glad to hear you were dressed for immersion and able to self rescue.

Good job on your first outing out of the jaws and congrats on the self rescue.

Keep in mind that when the fan turns on at HMB that paddle back will be brutal..... Been there done that several times.

Congrats on the successful maiden trip out of HMB.  Thanks for the crabbing report Spring45.  The alternative to the wetsuit is the dry suit and it worths every pennies!

Congrats on your maiden voyage.  Bummer about going for a swim, but at least you got to practice self rescue and know that you could do it!

And post some pictures next time!!   :smt003

Yea, you are right, agoodhi. But no, I didn't lose any gear. I had it all tethered down. and btw, the Standard Horizon 300 took a dunk with me. works just fine still. That was a good purchase. the wetsuit was crucial..

If looking like a clown exiting your wetsuit is the only reason for a dry suit, don't bother....... it's absolutely hilarious watching someone try to get out of a dry suit the first time when there tired and sore, special after watching them struggle to get in it in the first place .... you experienced guys know it's funny as hell, and lots of you been there.

I'm going to have to youtube that.  One thing I failed to mention and thank you guys for your your .02 was helping me with my Standard Horizon 300 VHF!! It was strapped to me when I fell in. It was battle tested on its first trip out. It didn't let me down. And to think that I almost purchased a cheap-o on Amazon. Still baffles me that when I search on Amazon for submersible VHF, all the ones with bad reviews pop up on the first page. No bueno..
