I think you're only buying a false sense of protection.

I've been shocked by one of those before OTW and I don't think it's going to stop a torpedoing GWS bent on getting you airborne like a seal.

Think about it! What kind of inertia do you think it would take to launch a 200 lb man somersaulting into the air from a rested position. Not to mention flipping his kayak in the process.

I could see how it would deter a shark that is just cruising by to check you out but one that is rocketing up at you from the depths....NOT!

I think it's a numbers game and if and when it's your time and the man in the grey suit decides to collect. A little zap from a shark shield ain't gonna do it  :smt009

very true, i just got done reading up on shark shield vs magnetic and all that stuff. A GW going full speed, nothing will stop it. It will deter a cruising shark however. At any rate, after reading up on it I'll just make sure I'm surrounded by a bunch of kayakers  :smt006 lol

YIKKES!! good to read no blood was shed. I'm sure that adrenaline has worn off and reality is hitting home.
i was lucky to have been scooped up and back into/onto my yak, because i would not have made that attempt to swim to shore......that is a tough call and i hope no one ever has to go through that.

YIKKES!

Damn that's heavy. I couldn't imagine having to abandon my kayak and swim for shore in this situation.
Also, 2 more preconceptions dashed for me: gws are gone in March...and gws will stop attacking a kayak after it figures out its plastic.
Glad the dude is safe and shared his story. Thanks!

A glock?  Only way I can see that coming in handy with regards to a shark attack is if you plan on putting yourself out of your misery if you get bit bad.

As a disclaimer I haven't made up my mind regarding the necessity of a shark shield

However
While I often wonder if a shark shield would be much of a deterrent to the initial charge of a determined shark I would think it would be handy and most useful for when you are now in the water maybe it would make the shark uncomfortable or want to leave a bit quicker once in the area. Don't get me wrong I never want to know for sure but I would think getting launched and then the shark splits because of the shield would be much preferable to whatever may happen in the next few seconds where you are now in the water with shark still around. If the shield would make the shark realize his mistake even a few seconds earlier might be all the difference. Just something to think about
Either way glad you are safe and thanks for sharing
