It was a bit past 4:30 Saturday afternoon. I was in my kayak. I had paddledfrom the Breakwater ramp to Shell St PG and was on my way back. I was hitoff the end of San Carlos Beach about 100 yards or so off the Monterey Bay Inn- probably over Metridium. So, I was near the end of a great paddle - Iencountered dolphins off Point Cabrillo and a large group of very young harborseals close in to Hopkins Station.

Suddenly, I heard a loud Bang as my kayak and I flew into the air. I landedoutside my boat, look back to it and to my horror saw a large great white sharkno more than three feet away had my kayak in its mouth. I could clearly seeit's 2-inch teeth and it's black eye that looked lifeless.

I scrambled away from my boat as fast as I could and started kicking towardsshore - really wishing that I was wearing fins! In between yelling "No GodNo" I was shocked at how many thoughts about how to survive ran through myhead - don't splash, don't let your legs hang down, keep your eyes on the sharkand swim away, don't act like a panicked seal. After Five minutes, maybe fiveyears - it was hard to tell, I pulled out my Nautilus Lifeline and called in amayday to the coast guard. They were having trouble hearing me. I spotteda sail boat and started frantically waving to them with my right arm as Ioperated the radio with my left hand.

While this was going on, the shark was using my boat as a chew toy. I saw itspin with the boat at least three times. It started pushing the boat towards meand then left the boat and headed for me. Suddenly it dove. I put my face inthe water to see if it was under me, but I couldn't see anything.

I looked up and saw the sail boat approaching me. After some very quickexplanations I said that I needed to get into the small boat. There was noladder or transom. I had been in the water for about twenty minutes. I waswearing a 3-mil, but had forgotten my booties and was bear foot. My feet werenumb and I was running on nothing but adrenaline. I could not get up into theboat or stand up on their motor. I asked them to call 911 and ask for coastguard assistance.

The coast guard showed up 5 minutes later and pulled me into their boat. Allmy gear was floating and was recovered. They took me back to the Breakwater..

In the parking lot I spoke with the people from the sailboat who came to myrescue. They were a young family who attended NPS. They were taking their youngdaughter out on her first sail. According to them, the shark was as big as myboat. I have a 14-ft kayak. Bite marks show that it had the whole girthof the boat in its mouth. My boat is covered with bite marks from end toend with multiple punctures. People told me that they could see the sharkslapping the surface of the water with its fins as it mauled my boat.

I had always thought that great whites hit a target to test it and thenbacked off. This was a prolonged attack on the surface.

I've just gotten back from a steak dinner with Scott and Nancy and a verygood bottle of wine donated by their neighbor. That's why we didn't make it toMember Night at the aquarium. I'm still not sure if I will sleep tonight,or want to try. I suspect that I just joined a very small club - one I neverwanted to join!

Hi All.
I don't post much of anything but thought I'd let you all know.
A buddy of mine works at a Kayak rental place in MB.

Said he saw it himself, about 1/4 mile of San Carlos Beach, a Landlord attacked a Kayaker.
Kayaker is fine - not a scratch.
Said the Shark torpedoed the Kayak from underneath at full speed & launched a 200# man into the air & into the water.
The shark proceeded to Attack the Kayak & after a few thrashes swam away.
Sailboat came by and picked the guy up - shaken but ok.

BE SAFE OUT THERE GUYS & GALS!!!!

But in all seriousness, is that two shark attacks in Monterey Bay in the same weekend?

Are you sure it's not the same event? The details and location sound the same.

Seems likely that its the same event.  Details of breaking events get  muddled all the time.

GWS are commonly referred to as the landlord or taxman and we are deadly serious about when they come to collect.

Yikes!!!!!!

I was diving Carmel yesterday and the vis was pretty good to 25'.

Most of my dives were in 30 FOW at this one spot and almost instantaneous the vis dropped to about 5'.

In my almost 30 years of scuba and free diving yesterday was the first time I had the willies about being attacked.

It affected my ability to enjoy my diving so much I relocated to a spot with much better vis.

I know they are always around and this attack happened a few miles away. It's just that it's so coincidental after so many years of diving I had that eerie feeling yesterday.

Glad he's OK!

It does sound like the same incident.

I don't understand how this relates. Safety (practices, equipment and strategies) are very important, but if you go in the ocean, you are at risk of an attack.

In this case, IMO, the only way to be certain to be safe from shark encounters is to not go out.
