4/7/07 Salmon?

If someone hits "gold", the customary "Fish On!" would probably be ill advised since, if others monitor 69 you might call in a swarm of PBees onto your location--probably way ahead of any fellow NCKArs.

maybe we should just give out gps cooridates for Guam, and see how long it takes them to figure it out before they turn around!

This just in from Tom's Sportfishing in Moss: "Wednesday April 4:The salmon opener is just a few days away and we are seeing some of the best signs we have seen for many years. We have had salmon eating orcas move in and out of here, the water color is right, the temperature is right, the bait is here and everyone has seen nice solid fish marks on their meters. Get ready for a killer salmon year!"

They usually say that every year for the opener unless the weather is bad. The bait shops and charter boats have had a very long winter and need the business to pay bills.

but this year it's true.......so far......... Add to that  nice dark salmon water with temps about 51-52, even 48-49 in some spots out there; and tons of plankton esp near the soquel hole, three trees and Davenport up to Pigeon even has krill showing up in the past week.  Grey whales and humpbacks feeding from Capitola to pigeon Point. Salmon eating orcas in the bay for the past month.

Best indicator are all the "incidental" catches of king (and silver....boooo) salmon over the past four weeks.  PBr's are catching salmon on little mackerel jigs, and have to throw them back.

The bait has been in and out  by the beach, but everyone I talked to says good  HUGE haystacks out there at the hole and the other spots i mentioned.  Not bait everywhere, but the concentrations are immense (anchovies with a few sardines an occasional herring).  This is all info updated this morning from skippers I know and trust totally, not bs.

So, it should be good, at least for the opener if the weather and these conditions hold for the next couple/few days.  No guarantee the fish will be at Moss, though, most of my reports limited to the areas mentioned above.

   The signs at the old launch ramp parking lot say yak launch and car parking are total of $8. and the box on the restroom wall has envelopes and a slot to pay. 
   My recollection is kind of "fuzzy" too, but I think that the ramps/lot is run by a special district, and I'll bet there will be someone making sure everyone's paid for all that new asphalt and parked in the right spots.

at the main launch there is a debit/credit card kiosk to pay for parking and launch fees.  I think it was $5 last year.

Maybe on sunday, though I might just stay local and go for the early halibut hunt.

The tailgate party at the Moss parking lot has already begun.  There were at least 6 vehicles RV's with boat trailers etc. in the lot this morning as I drove to work.  I expect more by this evening.  Just have to make it though two more days of work..........

Did anyone secure some tray bait?

I might be bringing a bait catcher for live bait, but it depends on conditions.
