I want to learn how to make my own salmon spinners, that are very similar to the Flying C. I spoke with a fisherman who said it costs me .15 to make his spinners, I wanted to ask him more about it but he looked real busy casting. I was doing some research and there is this metal contraption that costs over 100 dollars to twist the metal wires. lol I'm looking for a cheap easy way to do it with some needle nose pliers. Any suggestions on places online I can shop for parts, instructions, would be great.

Thanks!

Show a pic of the tool and what it does and I'm sure someone will come up with a solution.

Steph,

One of the Coastside Grill crew guys (Mike Souza) that you know, actually makes them for local tackle shops; he can get you started....

PM me and I will shoot you his number....

Here is the pic of the metal tool twisty thing. Kinda pricey for spinning some wire.

Glen- that would be great, please shoot me his number would be nice to chat with him about the process. Thanks!

Paying 7 bucks for a spinner is pretty pricey, I lost three at Benecia. Someone lost a whole bucket! At that price I could have gone out on a charter  :smt044

You could build a jig with some wood n nails, and use safety wire pliers n needle nose pliers to twist wire.

You don't need a wire former. You can use a round nose pliers if you're only doing it occasionally.

+1. There are also more malleable wires that you can use

Looks like that quick twist tool will do the same thing.

Ooh thanks guys!! That's really good info! I watched the video and it looks super simple. Only difference between that and the Flying C is that they don't use the weighted brass part inside the skirt, instead it's the beads? I guess I could just find the brass part online. 7/8oz is what I wanna make.

You'll want to spend the $100+ for the wire form tool! I started out with the cheapo wire twist and jumped immediately on the wire form. I mounted mine to a 4x4 piece of wood about a foot in length. Makes it easier to to be portable. With the wire form tool I can bust out 4-5 spinners in 10mins! I made the spinners below in under 30mins. Let me warn you though it can be a pricey hobby, but awesome when you catch salmon on your homemade spinner! I even invested in an air brush to paint blades and crankbaits. You buy 1/2oz to 3/4oz lead bodies and save money over the brass bodies. The single blades I have pictured all have 1/2oz lead bodies.

I've made many nice salmon spinners that have produced several salmon. I use the round nosed pliers and needle nosed. You can pick up the round nosed at any craft store that sells beading stuff. I use single strand stainless steel leader material from the fishing store.

I made 5 spinners to test using HF safety spooled wire, and a pair of cheap HF needle nose that I modified.  Ist drop I landed me a 20-25# native king. The spinner was a winner.

The spendy parts are the damn spoons!

These should do the trick if you use thin, semi-malleable wire.

I have a pair that I've used to make "wire baiters" for salmon trolling.

Glyn's recommendation is the same as matched by many other spinner makers.  I'm starting to make spinners this year, have enough supplies for like 60 of them..wishful thinking I know, but I figure its a good thing for the kids to help me with since they like beads.
