If they only cost him 15 cents a piece in parts he is probably spending a lot more to buy parts in bulk.......

I considered building some as well until I priced all my supplies blades beads and hooks I would have to make a ton just to make the cost worth it! It would be fun to make a few anyway but definitely not to save money.

Ya good point! I'd want it to save money. I bought a home made spinner today from a bait store for 9.99! Wowzers.

I'm going to do some research and maybe try to see if there are some cheap spinners that can be used for salmon fishing that might work, or if I could make some tweeks to them buy buying some extra parts :)

Kinda like rockf ishing with a jig head instead of the irons that can get costly :)

Blue Fox Pixee Spoons: Nickel/Green; 7/8 oz. 3.99 not bad

Oooh I'm gonna start looking for some spoons and spray them LOL

You could probably make a good looking spinner using heavy monofilament instead of wire. Take a look at some of the spinners used to troll for trout or walleye, and adjust the size/look as needed.

The biggest money saver for me these days is stainless steel hooks. I've been trolling with the same two hooks all season. Just retie, sharpen, and reuse.

Even if you rinse thoroughly, Gama and Owner hooks don't last worth a sh*t with repeated use in saltwater.

Also, stainless steel figure 8 snaps are saving me money vs. duolocks that would corrode after a trip or two.

Thanks for your Input AlexB! Good suggestion on trying heavy mono. I already have the hooks and the weigh, got the weight at Walmart. All I need now is to make the clevis, and some bright color (probably pink/green) plastic tubing.

Trust me. Not a good idea. After some time trolling the mono gets weak where the clevis is spinning. Hook up a nice fish and pop! Gone. Try using downrigger wire and crimping everything. Youll land the fish if it gets hit. Also don't waste time with colors other than Chartreuse, chrome, or pink, Chartreuse or Chartreuse.

I find that hard to believe, but maybe we have different ideas of what "heavy monofilament" means. Columbia River anglers use this kind of technique all the time. They put spinner blades in line ahead of their baits and catch piles of big salmon and steelhead. Search "Prawn Spinner" or "spinner blade in front of anchovy" for a few examples. I think most guys use plastic clevises to avoid damaging the mono.

Cool. I'll have to check those out.  I do know that they use a bunch of tackle in the northwest that doesn't work down here.

Such as this? Pretty neat.

Thing is, for rivers I thought that Salmon aren't hungry and just want to chomp at anything shiny in front of them because it's in their way?

Thanks for your input fire and Alex, I do have some 50 lb mono from my hand line that I could use and I found some downrigger wire, that I took off my mini downrigger.

I agree Chartreuse is THE color for spinners. Change the blade colors but not the beads.

Alex, have you tried spraying your hooks and lures with Saltex before rinsing. Helps a lot with the corrosion. factor. Then I put em out in the sun for a couple hours.  I've had several hooks last for several outings. They rust a little where you press down the barb, but the rest of the hook holds up pretty good. I've been using Gammys for several times.

Hey Glen,

I've heard good things about Saltex, but never tried it.

I've actually noticed the points on Gammy hooks start to rust within a few hours of getting them salty! Not drastically, but enough to lose their "sticky" sharpness. (These were the chrome plated type, not the red or black).

The stainless steel Mustad hooks I'm using now stay sticky sharp all day long. Some are on their second season and don't show any rust at all.

The SS Mustads are pretty dull right out of the package, but they hold a point nicely once you sharpen them.
