Last summer I finally broke down and got myself a lowrance fishfinder.  I purchased it at the Fishermans Wharehoue in Sacramento.  One of the sales people told me how to install it and he also programmed it for the type of fishing I was going to do.  I install it as instructed and then take it out to the ocean.  I turn it on and all I get is a white screen that shows me the depth and temperature all day long.  When I get home I read the instruction booklet and find that it is very confusing and not user friendly.  I take it back to he store and they reprogram it again.  I take it back out and I get the same results, depth and temp.  Now I take out the transducer and reinstall it and I still get the same results.  Finally I remove the transducer and Mcgyver it with a stick and a coat hanger so I can place it directly in the water and still all I get is a white screen that shows me depth and temp.

Kinda sucks when you become dependent upon the fish finder to find and catch fish. I have used them, but have not used them in almost eight years. It is fishing, not xbox. Cracks me up all the time when I see guys with dead batteries or something that renders their fish finders useless, and it absolutely ruins their day.
Sorry you are having trouble with your unit, several folks on here will get you lined out and taken care of. Don't let a busted or malfunctioning FF ruin your day or stop you from fishing bro.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

TURN OFF FISH ID.

When I turned it on, my screen did exactly what you're describing.  Lowrance has mine for repair/replacement right now, and I'll update this with whatever they tell me.

Make sure you have the latest software loaded.  Make sure fish id is off.  Make sure simulator is off.

If you run into issues, they have a good tech line or reach out to me.

Doesn't sound like a unit issue, though.

Yes.  What he said.  Fish id removes actual sonar feedback & converts it to goofy fish symbols.  Once you turn this off & get familiar with what stuff looks like on screen, life will be good.

There is a button somewhere that says "Reset unit to default". Usually that will get my unit back to factory default and working again. Make sure all the connections are tight too. If it "just" doesn't get going, send it back in to Lowrance. They tend to have good customer service reps. I think it takes about a week or two, depending on your location.

Take it back and get a different model if you can.  You didn't mention what model you have. Lowrance makes models from their $100 B&W Eagles to FF's $2k.
It's funny, depth and temperature tell me a quite a bit. Certain fish are active at specific temperatures like tuna or black bass . And a change in depth, a drop off is a sure indicator of a place to stop and fish in many areas of the Bay and ocean, as many captains mention in reports what depth fish were biting at.  If you are at places like Santa Cruz or Capitola, you can figure out where fish are sans FF just by going to where the kelp beds are and fish there.
Fish such as halibut cannot be picked up on sonar, but what you can do is chart sandy bottoms and bait schools where they like to hang out.
What I have learnt is many captains come back to the same spots (true by "way points" marked by GPS) on advanced FF or separate GPS units.  Many spots just happen to have physical landmarks that will put you in the general location of a good bite such as: the end of a Rockwall, kelp beds, a big rock in the water such as Red Rock or Rat Rock, a structure such as the Platform or the Pumphouse, a bridge such Benicia Or San Mateo, a pier as in Ozol or Berkeley.
Return the unit, as with any electronics, and get a unit that you understand better as an end-user.
Also, use your own instincts, knowledge, and experience to locate fish on the water in addition to what is says on your graph.
I have seen and been on boats for sturgeon where they have had two top Furuno and Lowrance FF's and it still didn't put fish on deck. Sometimes there are other factors as to when, where, and why the fish are feeding...

When I am rock fishing I usually do not use one.  I like to use it when I am salmon fishing.

I have been kayak fishing for 30 years and I would say that I have used a fishfinder less than 1% of the time over all those years.
