Kinda sucks when you become dependent upon the fish finder to find and catch fish. I have used them, but have not used them in almost eight years. It is fishing, not xbox.

I have been kayak fishing for 30 years and I would say that I have used a fishfinder less than 1% of the time over all those years.
Mine and Matt's were pretty handy for finding the bait balls so we could catch fresh bait last week  :smt002.

Yup, finding bait balls, small ones at times, and jigging one up was key to success.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Is it nearly impossible to read any text.
If so it sounds like they set it to overlap fish finder with down scan.
On mine when this happened I had to go outside in the middle of the night to read the text then going through the menu I did the reset which fixed the problem. It's been working great ever since. Good luck.
glade you made it
now let's get our fish on

Honestly, I hate to say it; as I have had faith and nothing but good things to say about Lowrances products when they work.... I am getting a little frustrated as but mine Has recently stopped working too. I have gone through 4 head units in two years....

Just had another die on me this weekend.. Fruatrating as it is, I am happy to say they've all had the West Marine protection so I don't have to deal with lowrance and shipping it back and forth..

Bill, could you help me out with this one? Mark4 HDI bought 10 months ago has less then a dozen times taken out on it and it won't power up at all.. Tried hard boot tried soft boot won't kick on and the power cable works fine on both my elite 4 and 7...

Bout to do the west marine thing again but that'll mean another $30 spent on a warranty to avoid hassling with lowrances... Let me know what to do 😜 Hugs n kisses!!

The HDI series is a tough one at this point since they have been discontinued for a couple years now (replaced by the chirp & then by the Hook series).  Pretty much impossible now to find one thru the Lowrance channels.  They got blown out by a select few online retailers.  WM didn't upgrade you when you sealed it out last?

I'll dig thru my collection & see if I have any HDI units left from demo.  I'll pm you after I get a chance to look thru my demo stock.

I had my Elite 7 HDI for a few years.  Kept up with software upgrades & not a glitch.  We hear more issues from kayakers than boaters; not sure if it is related to splashing, smaller battery capacities or ???  We aren't dealing with high $ units on kayaks generally but they should make their warranty period at the very least, I agree.

Just to clear the air (again).

No - I don't work for them.  I pro staff for them so my "pull" is limited.  I am happy to answer questions when I can, based on my personal experience & that in which lowrance shares with us.

Happy to offer free help but it's just that - free ...  Take it for what it's worth :smt044

I want to thank everyone for your suggestions.  I have done all of your suggestions a couple times, such as,  had Fishermans Wharehouse update the soft and set it up for the type of fishing I do and turn off the fish id. I have reset it to factory preset. And I have had Fishermans Wharehouse update the software again, set it up for my type of fishing again, and turned off the fish id again.  I have also taken out and then reinstalled my transducer.

My brother and I bought one at the same time, same place, and had the same salesman set ours up.  His works fine and mine sucks.

Then I'd suggest getting ahold of their customer service & get er done.

That's very odd seeing all these post about lowrance problems,I've had a humminbird (597 ci di hd)for years now and never had an issue,I purchased a elite 5 chirp from cabelas a while back for 199 plus the 50$ mail in rebate.but now seeing all these post I'm thinking of not even opening mine and just selling it
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

For what it's worth, I only had problems with my old humminbird, but my HDS 7 keeps ticking no matter what punishment I dole out on it on both the kayak and boat. We will see if the elite 7 chirp I'm using now will survive as well.
