Launch anytime as long as we are paid?

If you are not out there fishing by 6am, you don't deserve to win.  Launch as early as you want. Wind is coming up every day by 10:30 so I think 11 weigh in makes sense.

And, Mr Barker, I am NOT 107 yrs old.  I do have a birthday next week though (Will you still need me, will you still feed me.....)

I confesss to napddiction though......

PS if enough of us want 11:30 or 12 weigh in we can adjust.  So "weigh in" on the topic. Added Survey.

Already committed to a date of either the 5th or 13th. Had to keep both those dates open for a future engagement.
Just hoping it turns out to be the 5th.
Hell, make the weigh in at 9AM.
Who needs light to fish?

Alien- I can cover you with a Predator MX.  But plenty of space for a big flatty.  We know you can muster one up for KC Derby....

July 17, 2005.

Alexander Velasco drove home with a brand new fishing kayak on his car today after winning a stunning victory with the biggest fish ever weighed-in at the annual Father’s Day Kayak Fishing contest in Santa Cruz. Not bad for his first time ever on a kayak!

The kayak connection in Santa Cruz hosts two kayak fishing events each year, The Father’s Day contest in June, and Grandfather’s Day derby in September. This year, the June contest was a fizzle. With rockfish season not yet open, and the halibut slow to show in Santa Cruz, no weighable fish were brought in. Derby organizers decided to hold a “consolation” contest in July to award the 1st place prize of a new Ocean Kayak “Prowler,” angler edition. On July 17, 20 kayak anglers met under grey foggy skies at the Santa Cruz Harbor to test their luck and skill against the wily prey of the Monterey Bay and each other.

The derby is sponsored by Ocean Kayaks along with the Kayak Connection and the motto is “for people who catch big fish in small boats.” Well, Alexander Velasco of Seaside, CA proved that motto in spades today by hooking and landing a toad halibut that weighed in at 32.8 pounds! Velasco has been intrigued with the idea of saltwater fishing from a kayak for some time now. He was urged to attend the derby in a borrowed kayak by his friend Joel Lotilla, a longtime kayak angler. Lotilla took Valesco out to 60 feet of water near Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz, where Velasco proved he is a natural for the sport. Using a sliding sinker and a six-foot leader to a trap rig, Velasco says the hit was subtle at first. “It was just a tap-tap-tap, but when I set the hook and felt the head shakes, I knew this was a big halibut.” Velasco had a scary moment when he brought the fish to the side of the boat and realized just how big it really was. It took two gaff attempts before he finally swung the monster aboard his kayak, onto the stringer and into the hold of the boat.

A number of rockfish and lingcod were mustered for the weigh-in at Shamrock Charters, but none came close to Velasco’s huge flatty. First prize in the Women’s division was snagged by Pat “Sea Breeze” Grant from Carmel CA, with a beautiful 3 pound Kelp rockfish caught at Stillwater Cove. The Junior Division honors were shared by brothers Alex and Eric Kaneshige, 8 and 10 years old, for their nice string of rockfish, caught in front of Santa Cruz Harbor.

A special thanks goes to Bill Rawson and all the staff at Shamrock Charters for the use of their certified scale at the weigh-in, as well as their hosting of the awards Ceremony and Barbeque.
