Live sardines are out fishing fresh squid the past two days. Water has been awesome flat. The story has been big verms. No flatties for the boat but seen other boats bring some over the rail.

Can two people on a tandem kayak enter separately or do you have to be fully solo?

I think that is OK, but you have to catch and secure the fish solo.  In other words, your partner can't gaff the fish or net the fish for you......

BTW everyone, get your signups IN!!!!!  Call the shop or whatever.  Dave Grigsby will be at Kayak Connection at 6am Saturday to take late sign-ins, but if you do that you are wating fishing time.  It's a short list right now which means odds of winning a new kayak are really good.

Just talked to Mike Mowrey, Ocean Kayak/Old Town Rep.  He is coming down for the derby, and he's bringing new-design boats with him.  Here's first chance for many to see the PDL (pedal) boat and the newly redesigned Trident......

List is at around 30 people now, still a small group which makes chances of winning that much better!

Any questions for me,  please use the forum -this thread or PM- and tomorrow questions need go to Kayak Connection shop 831-479-1121.

Weigh in is at F Dock by the hand-launch ramp.  From 11am to 12 noon SHARP!  and, mola-mola's are NOT eligible- (good question).

Unable to make this years event. I believe I paid over the phone the previous event and downloaded the waiver. I then left the waiver in the envelope they had placed at the shop.  Maybe they can do the same this year for the late bloomers .  :smt001

Hope to at least drive down after work to check out the new tridents. From what I have seen online. Me likey !!  The price point is affordable for me.

I had to leave early but congratulations Austin. Heard it was another wsb that won first prize. Before I left I drove by and saw the prize kayaks out there. Looked like 2017 trident or 2017 old town pdl. Which one did you get?  You deserve it bro!!!  Pictures?  Speech?

.........And the winner is....Rippin'Lips!!!!  Austin pulled a rabbit outta the hat with a gorgeous WSB caught on squid in about 60 feet of water.  Fishing the bottom.  Like Travis in last year's derby Austin secured his claim to fame in the grey light of early morning.  Fish weighed in at 20 pounds.  Nice!

Travis mounted a good defense.  He caught his first kayak halibut that weighed in at 9 pounds.  Then he caught his 2d kayak halibut a while later.....Sounds like the flatties are finally starting to come in, yes?

Joe DeMarzio took third with an 8.7# lingcod, WTG!

BBQ was great as usual.  Mike Mowrey from Ocean Kayaks attended and showed off the new Trident 13 as well as the Old Town PDL boat.  He grabbed the wrong Predator MX from his pile at home though, so Austin will be getting the (really) brand new MX shipped down.  Travis took home an awesome WErner paddle, and Joe got to pick out a new PFD.

Thanks to all who participated in this community event, and thanks for helping raise funds for the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project!
