I wonder how many times sharks were in my vicinity and i was never aware of it. Maybe it's best not to know because once you hear that word "landlord" it can change your fishing for the day.

Glad everyone was ok.  Saw my first fin few weeks back at sc.  I was pretty freaked out, but since the seals didn't mind, i figured i should be ok to fish for a little while. Im thinking at about 10ft that's when they start to eat mammals and go on a growth spurt

I saw a mako special on sharl week where the makos get about 300lbs and slow down growing, but rarely, some get the taste of seals and sea lions, they would go on a huge growth spurt grom all that meat and fat and grow very quickly to 1000lbs. I believe they called them grander makos.  Pretty interesting, not saying it couldve been a mako, but just comparing the size/growth after starting to eat mammals.  Im sure it applies to gws as well.  There for, i'd say its rare to see a subadult size 12-16ft?

Aghoodi I heard you guys on the radio 😜

For all those scared of sharks... My own two cents are this....

They've always been around the entire ocean let alone Monterey for millions of years. This year is different due to the rise in temp of the water, warmer waters equal both higher metabolism and breeding. Hence why there are more "close to shore" sightings.

I fished sc sat and sun, without a worry in my mind however two friends of mine missed out on great fishing because of all the hype and scarce feeling people have been giving. I've fished in sharky waters on a kayak for the last 12 years. I've surfed here for 25+ years, seen many, not worried one bit. It's like seeing a pitbull, if they sense you are scared you are screwed, if not you are fine. There may be that one occasion that it just leant matter.. But I'm still not really worried. As long as you don't have a fish bleeding out or any attractants then why worry!? You're boat averages 13+ft long, unless it's October or November I'm not tripping.

You what the know the odds of being attacked by a shark are right?? You are more likely to die in your everyday commute to work... 5x over... So let's all give up working, as well as fishing 😜

Let's also keep in mind there are no fish in Santa Cruz, or Monterey, just Sharks  :smt003 :smt044 :smt010

For the record,  July and August is when the most attacks occurred to NCKA members and one in November.  3 happened in the Bean Hollow /  Pigeon Pt area.  I did not have any fish blood on my Revo 13 when I had my encounter at Capitola.

Its good that you have a positive attitude and enjoy the ocean.  I sure do.

Glad you're ok man.  The ones that you see at the surface are the small ones...the big ones like to hang back.  Welcome to the Red Triangle!!!   :shark

Its a resident shark. I watched from around forty yards as one thrashed a seal on the surface. Coolest thing I have ever saw in my life! Never scared me. Must have been an 15 foot or so. Blood everywhere. Right there near the red can. Best pic I could take it happened too quickly. Best way to tell if theres a white shark around is stick your finger in the water and if it taste salty....theres a shark around. :smt002

Those odds are skewed drastically when there's a big great white cruising under your boat.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I didn't mean to come across with any smart ass suggestion I am glad he was ok!! Bean hollow and anywhere north of 3 mile in Santa Cruz are always scary due to the larger resident Sharks that feed on larger animals like elephant seals etc.. And yes the time line is usually sooner for anywhere north of ano Nuevo. There are times I wouldn't surf at all up here because of that very reason..

Anyways just trying to help others not be as scared, I agree with everyone, just be conscienous and aware of your surroundings 👊🏽

Just a heads up Austin, but Mel (fishing addict) was attacked by a GWS in 40fow off Pleasure Point. Its a touchy subject for many people on here. Best approach is probably to tread lightly.    And as far as stats go, I personally know 6 people who've been attacked by GWS while kayak fishing btwn Vandenberg & HMB...out of maybe 400 kayak-fishing buddies (plus a handful of other attacks I know about, but don't know the victim). So I don't believe the statistical argument about being attacked by GWS vs hit by lightening vs winning the lotto. Just gotta be prepared and have a plan in case it ever happens. I guess easier said then done...like mike tyson said, everybody has a plan til they get punched in the face. :smt005   Sorry for the threadjackage!

I agree GWS are a touchy subject, and NCKA will always hash this out again and again. Andy isn't scared cause he's always drinking, and a friendly dude. He would probably pet a feeding shark and offer him a beer, but for me i'm going the other way. I'm scared of them, so i'll probably get hammered. At least i'll be in an exclusive club of brothers. Do you guys get T-shirts or something cool for surviving an attack? Lol.  :smt007

As with everything in life, the more you are experienced with it the more confidence you have in yourself. You have a ton of experienced with water and sharks so you are definitely comfortable but to someone who have never experienced GWS sighting it can be scary. So far going on 3 years of kayak fishing i haven't encounter one but got a scared from a Mola Mola so it's something I will definately have to get used to. But for the meantime i'm with Keith, i will go the other way until I get comfortable seeing GWS and then i'll be superman. lol

If you guys really want to what its like, the video is pretty darn close to what happened to me and what witnesses told me.

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2016/07/great-white-shark-research-population-behavior/

Me slowly pedaling -- GWS comes up from behind and shows his dorsal fin -- Charges hard forward, Bumps back of my kayak that goes a few feet up in the air.  Makes a hard right turn --  Bites the bow, right underside of kayak, 2 feet away from my right foot.  Shark goes airborne, kayaker and kayak goes airborne too.  Shark figures kayak is not food and swims away.

Despite this event I am went back fishing in the ocean and go out regulary.  I never go out alone and invested in Shark Shield last year.  So much for a ncka history lesson.  Enjoy the ocean but don't get cocky with the mindset that it won't happen to me.
