About 9 pm last night wife & I started hearing  what sounded like someone splitting wood across our little creek.  We heard what sounded like popping,  and crackling.  We thought it was odd our neighbor would be out at dark doing this.  Then....... the popping turned into super loud crackling, then all hell broke loose as shit started to rain down on our house!  Then a huge "Thump" and CRASH as something hit our house.  We knew almost instantly  what had happened. Just no idea of the magnatude  or scope of the problem.
I thought one of our Huge fur trees lost its top!  Wasn't till this morning we got to see what actually happened.

A 200+' Douglass fur from across our little creek split at it base ( Maybe 30 feet from ground) and toppled towards us!  It tree top is laying in our path to our lower yard!  On its way down it completly ripped out of the ground with impunity a decent sized tan oak, tossing it 20 feet from its hole into the corner of our deck, destroying the railing, it's tree top canopy then hit roof and slapped my new Velux' skylight shattering it's glass pane! It's safety glass so it didn't rain glass inside
So we have a 200 foot plus fur(And all its canopy and branches) laying in out path,(Pictures later not on tablet) nerves shot, cats freaked out, and yard trashed!
Have call into insurance, had visit today from insurance supplied tree removal service, for arrival tomorrow to remove the monster tree and canopy, and the tan oak,  Then we can get
to the deck to inspect it. I'm more Pissed that skylight was damaged than anything else!
  What a night!

+1 Scarry stuff! Trees are no joke when they fall. Tons of damaging timber. Glad it didn't try and join y'all in the bed.... :smt002
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

 Exciting read.. Loved the details.
As an arborist of 20 years,, I can say,, trees do weird stuff.
Glad no one hot hurt, to me that's the main thing.
I'm sure tomorrow will be cool with the tree guys there doing tree guy stuff.
Take it all in stride, before long it will just be a memory.

Scary stuff, and a close call. Glad all is well.

My brother, who lives in Oregon, had a big fir tree come right through the middle of their two story house one Sunday afternoon during a big storm. It virtually cut their house in half. Miraculously no one was hurt but the fire department had to rescue his daughter from the 2nd floor bedroom because the stairs got taken out. It was almost a year before all the repairs were completed.

You're lucky!   My neighbor had a fir slice her house in half !   Right down to the floor, then smashed her car 20 feet below.

She was in the kitchen area 10 minutes before it happened.  They would have had to scrape her remains... Guess she was lucky too.

Firs don't do so well in loose soil... not like Redwoods
