Hello,

Anyone have experience using the Deeper Fish Finder? I am in the market for a GPS and I kept browsing online but no confirmation of the feature.

Thanks,
Kevin

What's got you interested in this Deeper thing instead of one of the tried and true units from Lowrance, Garmin, or Humminbird?

Your phone already has mapping software, or you can download the Navionics chart app for $10.

I think you would be MUCH happier with even the lowest base model from any reputable company.

I tend to agree with AlexB for most circumstances, however the Deeper or other castable depth finders might be an interesting novelty for shore fishing or renting a boat in calm freshwater environments. Like AlexB said, it's the same price as a traditional depth finder and would have less features than one, so if you're considering getting one for a boat I would pass. If on the other hand you have some spare money laying around, give it to me. If you still have spare money laying around, the Deeper could be a interesting if expensive toy.

It seems like kindof a novelty item to me. But if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket and want a new toy, go for it!

4 hours of battery life from a 3.7V battery just wouldn't cut it for me. It claims to shoot up to 130', but I don't believe it. Hell, my $400+ Lowrance with a 12V 9AH battery doesn't shoot much deeper than 150 or 200' in saltwater.

i didn't know you can just use your phone as a GPS when out in the middle of the ocean with no signal... Do you need an internet connection? Do you guys just use your phones as GPS along with a fishfinder? Sorry, I've been browsing around and the ones with built-in GPS are bank and I don't really know the difference.

I use the GPS that's part of my Lowrance. I also have my phone (w/ Navionics ap) and Lifeproof case in my PFD pocket and a handheld Garmin as backup (in my dry bag with spare batteries).

I use the (free) Map my Run app as a backup. Just in case my FF/GPS battery dies. When I launch, I turn on the app and it will show a map with your route/location. Doesn't require a signal, as far as I can tell (similar to internal gps on your iphone).
But yeah, I'd definitely get a real FF unit before investing in the Deeper thingy.

Take a look at this thread:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=71864.msg816643;topicseen#new

Cheaper than the Deeper and it's got everything you're asking for.  And yes, you can use your smartphone in most places, but it's best to have redundant systems.

I found out the hard way that you do indeed need a 3/4G signal for the maps to work correctly so that the phone can download new map data. Without that you can get stuck staring at whatever low resolution map tiles it had loaded for the area you're in. Recent versions of Google Maps will allow you do download areas for offline use, but I would check that out before relying on it to work.

If you scroll Google maps to the area you want to fish before you leave cell service it will work. It might work to navigate to saved fishing spots if you set it up ahead of time. Can work well to find your way back to port in the fog. Turn on the satellite image while cell service works then scroll to the area and zoom in some, then leave the app on in the background. The map loads from cell service, your location is displayed from satellite signals and will work anywhere with a decent view of the sky. GPS can drain your battery fast so don't have it set to be running in the background. The Navionics app is good to have. You can get a free trial so check it out too.

My iPhone has pretty good accuracy. I set it on airplane mode so there was no cellular data. Then I drove a couple miles to see how close it would be to my position. The red marker is where I was standing and the blue dot is where my phone showed me standing. It shows it as 6.6ft error. Great as an emergency GPS and useful for finding a location that is visible in the satellite image.
