I and some others all had Malotte's. We all dove with scuba and freedive but the main attraction was fishing from one.  I have a red one and a blue one. I even dove for ab last year on it and still the best abalone kayak out there. Here if you know them I will give names and only initials as to protect the innocent LOL If you know them you can figure out who they are ok Me: David K._Dave L._ Tim P._ John L._ Dick O._ Ben and of coarse Rodney yes the same Rodney that has been bitten by a great white not once but twice. Tim P. would be the give away Tall big dude with a super deep voice if you met him you don't forget....LOL
Check this out I met Mr. Malotte he lives is Lincoln Ca. and doing well. Ya know what is so ironic he never dove or fished from his Malotte's  he got all his input from scuba diver's and freediver's that came to the shop and said do this for us. Great guy and he knows all the old school builders. He claims to be the first and could be.
If you shoot me your email I can tell you the last names. We used to go every weekend sometimes both days and weather was not even a consideration we'll get em. Great times and still having great times love it so much.

Don't know the names. We bought two from the rep who lived in greenbrae. Malotte scout 2. I met Rodney one day by Fisk mill. He was driving that VW with San Jose shark stickers all over it. We mostly ab dove and started fishing from them in 78. Let's fish. I think we talked at the fort last year. Do you know Dennis andersen?

Have you checked out the YakAttack transducer arm. I have seen a few in action and am thinking of getting one for my kayak.
YakAttack CallBlock

This one by Ram: http://www.yakattack.us/CBO_SB1_316_18_TRA1_p/cbo-sb1-316-18-tra1.htm

This is the one I got from Dan. I like it very much but have noticed that it does pull the kayak quite a bit. After thinking this out I think I might try to urn this through my scrupper hole next time and see if this doesn't lesson the drag  I had with it. It is not a big issue since I can pull it out of the water if I plan to travel fast and deploy easily.

Thats me we did talk at the fort (you in a white truck with racks) and yes I know Dennis Andersen we go way way back. Biker days good ol'e boy. Looking forward to going again as soon as Ab starts then fishing. The fort has turned into a hit and miss with the gate opening. If this stupid El Niño  ever settles down we could start bouncing the bottom again.

To the other kayak with the "YakAttack transducer arm" that's why I made my own out of flat bar it pulls but ever so slightly. I like it its cheap and until some one comes up with something that works better it will do. The magnet one looks like it is a great idea but I think its way to expensive and it also will pull it too does not use a flat bar if it did maybe worth it.

For you Hobie folks with the Lowrance ready systems that want to run the long Total Scan Transducer. BerleyPro makes a mount and cover that replaces the exsisting transducer cover plate on the Hobies. The cover protects the transducer.

Available through Mariner Sails in Texas

Thought you would like that. I was skimming through a hobie forum and some had mentioned this UK company Berkley Pro, looked it up saw all the stuff they make and saw that Mariner Sails was a US dealer. Pretty cool stuff on the Berkley Pro and Mariner Sail site.

At the price they sell that cover for, its hardly worth doing a DIY fiberglass one at home for the greater majority of the general public.

I'm no rocket surgeon and I don't use a ff, but if you want it in the water couldn't you mount it right on the rudder itself. And if you have no rudder couldn't you mount it on the stern where the rudder mounts?

You could but the modern transducers are far larger and places on the bow & stern are more prone to exiting the water which causes a FF to have to "reset" and exhibits signal loss issues.

In mounting transducers, Has anyone considered the use of a Magnet?

Some rare earth magnets are pretty strong.  Use an adhesive to place it inside.

Mount your transducer to a painted piece of carbon steel or magnetic Stainless that is shaped to fit the contours.  Have a tether line vs just the wire.

When not needed be easy to stow too.

Assuming the magnetic fields don't effect the transducer.  A little testing before one gets to far with it.

My brother mounts his transducer to the outside of his hull using velcro. Weird and wacky, but it actually seems to work pretty well.

Both my yak and TLW's are mounted in the scupper holes my big tuna has the cigar style on a PVC pipe and the wife's mariner is mounted in the tunnel with a plastic sink drain. Easy peasy. Wires tied on the deck.

That would not be difficult at all.. 10 dollars worth of resin and cloth..  Plus you'd have the satisfaction of DIY.      Could also make it out of a thermoformed plastic.

Re;  Us stupid kayak makers..  :smt044    Can't please everyone!      Some would ask,, "Why is it so big".  Others,, "I don't need that ".     When you mold in these cavities, it requires more plastic which = more weight,,, which = more complaints,,, which = more discussions about why stupid kayak makers can't make these things lighter...  :smt006      I rest my case.   :smt002
