I went to Santa Cruz with the family today (beautiful day but very crowded) and I saw a licensed fisherman at the dock with a bunch of RF. So just wondering if the RF season and bag limit only applied to recreational fisherman?

RF is open year round to divers and shore based fishermen.
Is it possible they were one of those
I only fish on days that end with Y

No idea if it's open right now but the regs are definitely different for commercial and sport.

How much does a commercial fishing license cost? Do you get a discount if you fish from a kayak?
I don't like stuff that sucks.

There are a handful of "nearshore" and "deeper near shore" permits out there. Basically rod and reel rockfish permits. They have small quotas and the permits disappears when the owner dies. It's an extremely low impact fishery which never got a seafood watch green listing. The draggers did. Thanks Julie!

For a commercial licence and commercial registration of your yak it's about $500 a year. You can catch as many halibut, mackerel, wsb, king fish, smelt and a few others as you want. Ling cod quotas vary between 100 and 400 lbs per month with closed  winter months. Sand dabs have a quota. Not sure how much. Probably a few hundred pounds. If you have the time and gumption you can make landings that make sense.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

Dude, five hundred clams for all you can eat on certain species, and extended fishing season?!?!  100 lbs of lingcod is a assload of ling.  I assume this license will also provide for legalized sale of catch?

costs roughly 10x a rec license, yet prolly 2 orders magnitude more opportunity.  The wheels be turning in my hed ....

There are a few NCKAers who do it...or did it. Pretty good money on just lings alone. Plus you can keep 10 and totally mess with other people. So, yes you'd have higher 'limits' and longer 'season' but that's just part of the appeal...that new kayak or rod or even bait?? Tax write-off hahaha! Of course, there are many layers of bureaucracy to navigate (e.g., don't ask recreational anglers to help carry your kayak).

From what i was told its not all fun and games with commercial fishing. The catching is the easy part. Its getting someone to weigh and document your catch for fish and game. Usually wholesalers. And if your not selling it to there people. And if there is nothing in it for them? Unless you know someone who knows someone. There is no sense in them going out of there way. I could be wrong for kayakers . I believe Albycor knows a little more about this subject as far as boat commercial.
