after abalone diving and being checked out by a game warden are you required to let the game warden use your ab gauge to check the size of your abalone ? or just show him your ad gauge and tell him to use his own

I would let them use your gage if they ask. If not, they may decide to check you, your gear, your vehicle, etc with  fine toothed comb. Even your store bought gage can be checked for accuracy, if it .10" short you can be sited for non compliant gage.

I don't see any drawback in letting him/her using your Ab gauge to verify your Abs.

I concur with snapperhead and Sailfish...

Why would you not want them to use your gauge??

It is relevant to know whether the abs clicked on your gauge, in case you were to argue later that you believed based on your gauge that they were all legal, or that his gauge was not accurate (especially if the abs were returned to the ocean).  He certainly has a more compelling case if he observes that your own gauge proves them short.  (even though I don't think it is clear that there is a knowledge requirement).

Does it matter? Who's pulling 7.000001 abalone?  If you're borderline on an abalone being 7", just swim five feet and you'll find an 8".

If it measured legal on your gauge, wouldn't you want the warden to use your gauge rather than his own or someone else's which may not measure correctly?

This is a good question, and my answer is similar to this:

Quote from: Jeremy
just swim five feet and you'll find an 8".

If I'm at a very over-picked spot on a rough day I might pick an ab that's not too far over legal size, so it's possible that I could end up in trouble if my 7" gauge is actually 6.9...

Usually when I go abalone hunting I go to places where I may find a ten, and I might settle for a 9+.  In today's resource-depleted and potentially over-scrutinized world, it's probably a very good idea to just go for abs that are significantly larger than the legal minimum.

I think it's a great question.

I would not give consent to use my iron

Just say no.

Basically nothing good can ever come from consenting to law enforcement requests. Only the status quo. At best. Just. Say. No.
